Description

PATHNTED PEB. 4, 1908. D. H. COHEN.
CHECK PROTECTOR.
APPLIOATION FILED BEPTJO. 1907.
Q NOTOVER IO 'I'HOUS- DUDLEY H. COHEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CHE CK-PROTE GT OR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1908.
Application filed September l0, 1907. Serial No. 392,119.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, DUDLEY H. COHEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Protectors, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to what are known as check protectors, designed for the purpose of marking a check, draft or similar paper so as to prevent the fraudulent raising thereof, and the object of the invention is to provide a simple 'and effective device of this class in the form of a stamp which may be conven iently applied to a check, draft or similar paper and which will inform the party, bank or other institution on whom the check or draft is drawn of the amount thereof in such a way that the fraudulent raisingVof the check or draft will be practically impossible.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part and. in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and in which:-
Figure l is a face view of my improved check protector. Fig. 2 an impression made by the check protector with the parts thereon in the position shown in Fig. l.. Fig. 3 a back view of the check protector and Fig. 4 a transverse section on the line 4, 4- of F ig. 3 as shown in the drawing.
In the practice of my invention l provide a circular plate a, the back of which is provided with a cylindrical projection ci?, having in the form of construction shown, a knob or head ai which is preferably milled and which forms a handle for the device.
The central cylindrical projection a2 of the plate a is provided adjacent to said plate a with a deep annular groove a and inclosing block a is an annular plate l) the bottom surface of which is Hush with the bottom surface of the plate a, and the top portion of which is provided with an annular 'l lange or rim b2 which overlaps the plate c and which -[its in and is rotatable in the annular groove w.
Mounted on the annular plate l) is a disk c of slightly less diameter than said annular plate and said disk c, is provided at one side with a segmental extension c2 provided on its outer end with a segmental flange c3 in which are formed at regular intervals notches or recesses c4, and secured in the cylindrical projection a2 is a spring rod d which ranges radially over the disk c, and the outer end of which is adapted to bear on the flange c3, and rest in the notches or recesses el. As thus constructed it will be seen that the plate a which occupies a central position, and the disk c may be locked together by the spring rod d, when said rod rests in one of the notches or recesses c", and the parts a and c may be rotated together independent of the part l) which may be held stationary by the thumb and fingers of one hand, while the knob or head a" is grasped by the thumb and fingers of the other hand.
lhe bottom of the plate a is provided with a type piece e bearing the words not over, while the annular plate l) is provided with an annular type piece f bearing numerals as follows:1,2,3,4l, 5, 6,7,S,9, l0, 12, 15, 1S, 20, and the bottom of the segmental extension c2 of the disk c, is provided with a type iece g bearing the words units, tens, hundreds, and thousands which are arranged radially thereon.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the drawing and the following statement.
lf an impression of the stamp as shown in Fig. l be made on a cheek, draft or similar paper the result will be as shown in Fig. 2, and the impression will read not over17 l0 thous. This will, ofcourse, give the party, bank or institution, on whom the check or draft is drawn, notice that the original check or draft as signed by the maker was for not over $10,000, and in this way the fraudulent raising of the cheek o1' draft is avoided. It will also be apparent that the impression may be made to read or indicate any desired amount, as for instance not over" Hfive units, which would mean $55.00, or not over" live tens, which would mean $50.00, or not over live hundreds which would mean $15500, and so on with all the numbers or numerals on the annular plate l), and it will also be apparent that any desired numbers or numerals may be placed on this plate.
My invention is not limited to the exact shape of the various parts herein shown and described. For instance, the part a is shown and described as the plate around which the part l) may be rotated, but the part a may be made in any form, all that is necessary in this connection, being that said part a may be rotated in the part b, or the part b rotated' Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A check protector, comprising a central member, an annular member inclosing the central member and a top member placed on the annular member and provided at one side with a radial segmental extension, said central member being provided centrally With a raised knob or handle around which the annular member and top member are rotatable said central member, annular member and radial segmental extension being provided With printing surfaces in the same horizontal plane.
2. A check protector, comprising a central member, an annular member inclosing the central member and provided with an in- Wardly directed annular flange or rim Which rests thereon, and a top member placed on A the annular member and provided at one side With a radial segmental extension, the central member being also provided centrally With a raised knob or handle around which the annular member and top member are rotatable said central member, annular member and radial segmental extension being provided with printing surfaces in the same horizontal plane.
3. A check protector, comprising a central member, an annular member inclosing the central member and provided with an in- Wardly directed annular flange or rim which rests thereon, and a top member placed on the annular member and provided at one side with a radial segmental extension, the central member being also provided centrally with a raised knob or handle around Which the annular member and top member are rotatable, and means for locking the top member to the central member.
4. A check protector, comprising a knob or handle provided With a central stamp member, a rotatable part mounted on the central stamp member and provided with an annular stamp member which incloses the central stamp member and is in the same plane, and a top rotatable part mounted on the first named rotatable part and provided at one side With an extension stamp member in the vsame plane as the central and annular stamp members.
5. A check protector, comprising a'central stamp member provided on one side with a knob or handle, a rotatable part mounted on the central stamp member and provided With an annular stamp member Which incloses the central stamp member and is in the same plane, and a top rotatable part mounted on the last named rotatable part and provided at one side with a segmental stamp member in the same plane as the annular stamp member and the central stamp member.
6. A check protector, comprising a central stamp member provided on one side With a knob or handle, a rotatable part mounted on the central stamp member and provided With an annular stamp member which incloses the central stamp member and isA in the same plane, and a top rotatable part mounted on the last named rotatable part and provided at one side With a segmental stamp member in the same plane as the annular stamp member and the central stamp member, and means for locking the top rotatable part of the central stamp member.
7. Acheck protector, comprising a central stamp member provided on one side With a central knob or handle having a reduced neck, a rotatable part mounted on said central stamp member and provided With an annular stamp member Which incloses the central stamp member and is in the same plane, and a top rotatable part mounted on the last named rotatable part and provided at one side with a segmental stamp member in the same plane as the annular and the central stamp members.
8. A check protector, comprising a central stamp member provided on one side With a central knob or handle having a reduced neck, a rotatable part mounted on said central stamp member and provided With an annular stamp member which incloses the central stamp member and is in the same plane, and a top rotatable part mounted on the last named rotatable part and provided at one side With a segmental stamp member in the same plane as the annular and the central stamp members, and means for locking the top rotatable part and central stamp members together.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing Witnesses this 9th day of September, 1907.
