WORK HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 20, 1907.

PATENTED JAN. 28, 1908.
MARTIN P. H. SOHROEDER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WORK-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1908.
Application filed June 20,1901 Serial No. 379.859-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVIARTIN I. H. Sermon- DER, a citizen of the United States, residing at 542 School street, in the city of Chicago, county of (look, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVorkIIolders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to work holders, adapted to be used by. seamstresses and others who do needle work; and the object of my invention is to provide a work holder as mentioned which may be readily clamped to a window sill, sewing machine table or other suitable place, and to which the work may be attached by pinning it thereto in order that the work may be held taut by one hand of the worker, leaving the other hand free to use the needle.
A further object is to provide a work holder as mentioned, which may be folded to occupy but little space.
Further objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in View my invention consists in a pin cushion or pad, to which the work may be pinned, having a clamp whereby the same may be attached in any suitable place, and in forming the device so that the whole may be folded.
My invention further consists in various novel constructions and arrangements of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device embodying my invention and Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, also illustrating, in dotted lines, the device in folded position.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the pin cushion or pad to which the work is to be pinned, and which may be of any desired shape or size. To the bottom of the cushion, is secured a bracket having a clamping screw by which the cushion is attached to a suitable ledge, as the edge of a sewing machine table. The bracket preferably comprises two parts pivotally connected in order that the same may be folded, but if desired it may be made in one piece. In the drawings I have illustrated a two part bracket; one part being attached to the cushion and the other carrying the clamping screw. The part connected to the cushion comprises an arm, 2, which may be formed integrally with the base of the cushion or may be a separate piece. connected thereto. The part, 2, is provided near one end with depending lugs, 3, between which is pivotally connected one end of the bracket portion, which carries the screw. This portion comprises a vertical arm, 4 and a horizontal arm, 5. The upper end of the arm, 4 is connected to the lugs, 3 by a pin, 6, and the outer end of the arm, 5 is provided with a vertically disposed sleeve, 7, through which is threaded the clamping screw, 8.
The screw, 8, is provided with a swivel end, 9, which impinges against the bottom of the table (shown in dotted lines Fig. 1) and the bracket portion 2 rests on the top thereof. To prevent marring the wood, the part, 2 is provided with a cushion, 10,"and the swivel head, 9, with a cushion, 11.
It is obvious that the device may be readily attached to and as readily detached from the edge of a sewing machine table or the like; and, that the cushion pad, 1 may be folded over as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, to occupy less space.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described a foldable clamp in combination with a cushion to which work may be pinned attached to one part of said clamp and pads on the jaws of said clamp, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, a bracket comprising the arms, 2 and 4 hingedly connected and the screw, 8 in combination with the cushion, 1 upon the arm, 2 to which work may be pinned, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, a two part clamp hingedly connected in combination with a cushion fixed to one of said parts and a clamp screw upon the other as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
