Be it known that 1, JOHN KENNY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Amherst, in the Province of Nova Scotia and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in BroomProtectors, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in brooms, comprehending specifically a broom constructed of waste products of wood working factories cut to the desired size and length.

In connection with a broom of this character the invention contemplates an adjustable protector which is adaptedsfor maintaining the broom head in shape under all conditions of wear and which may be adjusted longitudinally of the broom head to prolong the life of the broom and increase its effectiveness.

The invention will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing my broom, Fig. 2 is a similar view, the protector being in open position, illustrating particularly the means for securing the protector in place, Fig. 3 is a plan of the protector, Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.

Referring particularly to the drawings my improved broom is in usual form having a head constructed of slivers of hard wood A which may be readily securedfrom the waste products of any wood working factory, and are, of course, to be of a size and length necessary for the most effective result desired in connection with the particular broom.

As a means for securing the material of the head in position and providing for the adjustment necessary to compensate for the wear of the broom, my invention also contemplates the use of a protector. This protector comprises a casing corresponding in sectional contour to the shape of the broom head 1 and preferably divided longitudinally into duplicate members 2 and 3. The respective members are arranged for hinged connection through the medium of rings 4 passedthrough the members adjacent one edge of each, and maintained in closed or operative relation through the medium of catches 5 carried by one member designed to engage appropriately formed lips 6 carried by the other member. Each member is formed at the relatively u per end with a vertically projecting semi-0y 'ndrical extension 7, said extensions together forming, when the members are in closed relation, a sleeve designed to embrace the handle 8 of the broom. The sleeve is preferably of truncated cone shape, the wall thereof inclining inwardly from the connection with the protector toward the upper or free end, each extension 7 being formed at the relatively upper end with a laterally or inwardly extending series of spur teeth 9, designed when the members of the protector are arranged in closed relation to take into the wood of the handle and preventindependent endwise movement of the protector. A securing collar 10 is arranged for cooperation with the sleeve extension, said collar being of annular form in cross section and designed to be passed over the free end of the broom handle. The wall of the collar is inclined to correspond with the inclination of the wall of the sleeve, being furthermore of such diameter relative to the diameter of the sleeve as to cause the collar to engage the wall of the sleeve in operative position of the collar and force the teeth 9 into the material of the handle. formed near the relatively lower or free end with a transversely disposed row of spur teeth 11, designed when the protector is in operative position to be forced into the material of the broom head and further aid in securing the protector against independent movement.

In applying the protector to the broom the members thereof are separated, as indicated in Fig. 2, and one of the members 'applied in position to partially envelop the broom head and handle. The second member is folded upon the hinge connection 4 and secured to the applied member through the medium of the catches 5. The collar 10 is passed over the upper end of the broom handle and forced down to embrace the extensions 7 of the respective members, such operation serving to force the teeth 9 of the extensions into the material of the handle. The protector is preferably of somewhat less length than the length of the broom head, so that in the initial adjustment of the protector to a new or unused broom the protector will accurately and snugly fit the broom head throughout. As the broom wears in use, however, the protector may be readily raised relative to the broom head to provide for the projection of a sufficient length of the broom ead beyond the lower edge of the rotector.

The construction, therefore, provides for the use of the protector with a broom until the head of the same, or the efiective portion thereof, is entirely worn away, it being noted in this connection that the relatively free or lower edge of the protector serves as a binding medium for the material of the broom head and thereby maintains said material in the close compact condition most eiiective in use.

The material of the broom proper is preferably of hard wood, whichin conjunction with the protector described insures a most efiective broom head. The adjustable pro tector insures the adjustment of the broom head to provide for taking up the wear of the broom bristles and thereby materially prolonging the life of the broom. Furthermore, the protector avoids the necessity of the usual broom sewing, as it acts as an effective binder for the broom brush. The combination of a broom comprising a head and a handle, with a protector comprising a two-part shell or casing having continuous unperforated walls and semi-frustoconical handle-engaging portions, handlegripping means on the said portions, rings permanently and hingedly connecting the parts of the casing together at one side, spring catches for locking the parts of the casing together around the head atthe opposite side to form a closed and tight housing around the head, gripping means on the parts of the casing for engaging the head, and a hollow fru'sto-conical member irictionally held on the said portions and cooperating with the latches to hold the parts in locked position.
