To all whom-z'tmag/ concern.' p
Be it known that I, JOHN R. SHOFFNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dora, in the county of Jederson and State Vof Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Miners Lamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying'drawings. n
This invention relates to aV tool for a miners lamp and it isl an object of the invention to provide a device of thisgeneral character embodying novel and improved means whereby the same may be employed for digging refuse caked carbide from the bowl of the lamp and to afford a scraper for cleaning the corroded Y carbide from the threads of the lamp.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this kind which may be readily used as a 'screw.
driver and as a pry to open the lid of the lamp when it sticks and to facilitate the putting in of new felts. K
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved tool for a miners Vlamp whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient Vand advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. Y
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my inventionv maybe the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein l Figure 1 is a View in perspective illustrating a tool constructed in accordancewith an embodiment of my invention and applied to the guard of a miners cap;
Figure 2 is la viewV in perspective of my improved tool as herein disclosed;
Figure `3 'is a view in side elevation with of the tool as herein set forth. Y l Y As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, my improved tooly comprises an elongated and substantially iiat memberY v1 formed of steel or kindred material and which has one end portion formed'into va chisel edge 2 for use as a screw-driverpand pry and also as a scraper for cleaning the corroded carbide from the threads of ay minersllamp ,andi'for 'digging the refuse caked carbide from the bowl of the lamp.
This last use is of particular advantage as it avoids the necessity of hammering the lamp proper against hard objects as is now generally done resulting in injury vto the lamp.- Y l The opposite end portion of the member 1 is returned to provide a spring loop 3 the outer end of which being continued by the elongated arm 4 positioned closely adjacent vto the member 1 andr in parallelism therewith, said arm 4 having its free end terminating a material distance inwardlyof the free end of the member 1 so as not to interfere when the memberV 1 isbeing used for the purposes hereinbefore referred to. also tov be understood that the loop 3 constitutes a handle member to"facilitate the manipulation of the` member 1. The outer It isy or free end portion of the arm4 is disposed on a slightoutward curvature, as at 5, with respect to the member 1.
; The arm 4 substantially midway its ends has in swiveled `connection therewith the Vtubular member or sleeve 46 'in which is adapted to be inserted a drill case and also providing a reamer for the ,lamp tip.
The back of the member 1 preferably in advance of the arm 4 the file surface 7 .A
has produced thereon When my improvedV toolis not inuse, the i Vsame may be readily engaged with the guard G carried by the miners cap, a marginal portion of the guard GrV being engaged between the member 1 and army 4 as is clearly indicated inthe accompanying drawings.
From the foregoingV description it isv ,limiting myself to thejprecise arrangement and Vformation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in prac tice except as hereinafter claimed.v ,y
vI claim:
1. A tool for use in connection with carbide lamps comprising an elongated member having one end portion returned to proi vide an overlying arm7V the re'eend of the [opposite end portion of said member being provided with a, chisel edge.
2. A tool for use in connection Withoa'n bide lamps comprising yan `elongated*member having one end portion-returned to pro- Vdean overlying arm, the free end of the 10 arm terminfitiifggr a' materiel distance iii- Wardly of the free end of the member, the
opposite end portion of seid member being provided With a chisel edge, the connecting portions of thememberand arm constituting a spring` loop, said loop lalso serving as a handle. l
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my sigiiaturei-
