UNITED STATES DARNELL A. BRATHWAITE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMPOUND SHIP-(TALKING TOOL.
Application filed September 27, 1923.
This invention relates to improvements in calking tools as used in packing the joints and seams in the hulls and decks of wooden ships and has as its main feature the provision of a tool by which all of the several operations of cleaning, scraping and pre paring the surfaces, as well as tamping new material therein, can be conveniently and economically accomplished.
Another object is to provide a compound tool for such purposes that is capable of be ing used to perform all of said operations expeditiously and without recourse to a number of separate implements.
A further aim is to so combine the parts as to operate without interference and in an entirely practical manner.
These several objects are attained by the novel construction and arrangement of 20 parts as hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the shank portion thereof in detail.
Figure 3 is a like view of the chisel element or reeling iron.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the double ended scraper and hook.
Figure 5 is a side elevational view of the bolt and winged nut.
In these views the numeral designates in general the spike iron, the same consisting of a cylindrical shank bar 11 having at one end a head 12 to receive the blows of a mallet, the shank bar at its other end blending into a wedge-like body 13, of rectangular cross section, gradually tapering at its two main sides to the obtuse point 14, the body 13 havingnear its center an opening 15.
The reefing iron, shown inFig. 3, consists of a plate 16 gradually increasing in thickness from its transverse edge 17 to its narrowed thicker end 18, and in one side of the plate is a recess 19 suited to receive a considerable port-ion of the wedge body 13,
Serial No. 665,238.
which is adapted to be disposed level therein and held from displacement by a bolt 20 passed through the opening 21 in the plate when in register with the opening 15.
Another plate 22 is provided with an opening 23 through which the bolt 20 may pass and be secured rigidly in its adjustment by a winged nut 24:.
One end of the plate 22 is curved to present a reeling hook 25 having a relatively sharp point adapted to enter a narrow seam and remove old worn calkings, and the other end of the plate is broadened as at 26, and bent at an angle to provide a sharp scraping edge 27 adapted to scarify the surfaces adjacent the seam to be filled.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the reefing iron 16 may be rigidly held to body 13, it being bound at both sides in addition to the nut and bolt.
It will further be apparent that the compound hook 25 or scraper 27 may be rotated on the bolt into either position and thereafter firmly secured.
The operation of the implement will be manifest to those familiar with the art and it will be recognized that a simple and ellicient tool for the purpose has been disclosed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A compound calking tool comprising a spike iron, a reefing iron, a combined reeling hook and scraper, and means for detachably connecting said parts.
2. A compound calking tool comprising a spike iron, a reeling iron having a recess to receive a portion of said spike iron. a reefing hook, a scraper preferably integral with said hook, and a bolt passing through regis" tering openings in said spike iron, reefing iron and the connection between said hook and scraper, whereby the latter elements may be rotated and clamped when in adustment.
DARNELL A. BRATHVAITE.
