UNITED STATES PATENT oEEroE.
GEORGE AUGUST BUCHHOLTZ, OF vWATERFORD, WISCONSIN.
RE PAIR-B UCKLE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14, 1908.
Application filed February 18. 1907. Serial No. 357.864.
object to provide a repair' device Vfor this purpose, which will be in the nature of a buckle, and which may loe quickly and easily applied.
Another object is to provide arepair buckle which may be manufactured at a low ligure, and which when in use, will have the appearance of the ordinary form of buckle.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in form and minor details may be made within the Scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a view of a harness strap repaired with the present device, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the buckle with the straps removed, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the bifurcated tongue, Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken through the pivot bar to disclose its reduced portion.
Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises the usual rectangular `frame 5, including parallel side portions 6 and connecting end portions 7 and 8. A central pivot bar 4 is formed integral with the side portions, and extends transversely therebetween, and adjacent to this pivot bar, the side portions are bent downwardly and then outwardly, as shown at A, to oi'lset the end portions 7 and S 'from the plane of the pivot bar.
A pair of tongues 9 and 10, of the usual shape are provided, and the tongue 9 has its innerv end bent into an eye 9/ around the pivot bar 4, for movement of the free end of the tongue into and out of engagement with the end portion 7 of the frame.
The tongue 10 is bifurcated at its inner end7 as shown, and the resultant spaced portions are bent to form alining eyes 11 and 12, which encircle the pivot bar at opposite sides of the eye 9. The pivot bar is reduced at its central portion, so that other than slight lateral movement of the tongues thereon is prevented. rlhe tongue 1() is movable, as will be understood, to bring its free end into and out of engagement with the end portion S.
In order to give the present device the appearance of an ordinary buckle, when it is in use, an upwardly extending loop 14 is carried by the frame 5 at the end at which the end portion S is located, and includes side members 15 and a connecting top member'l.
The side members 15 are in reality eXtensions of the side portions 6 of the frame, which beyond the end portion 8 are turned upwardly at right angles. The top member 16 of the loop thus occupies a vertical plane outwardly of that of the end portion 8, so that it is out of the path of movement of the Afree end of the tongue 10.
1n use, when a harness or other strap breaks and a quick and neat repair is desired, it is but necessary to perforate the broken ends, passing one end beneath the end portion 8, and introducing the tongue 10 through its perforation. The other end of the broken strap is then passed beneath' the end portion 7, and the tongue 9 is passed through the perforation formed in this portion of the strap, as will be readily understood. This perforation, however, is formed some distance from the broken end of the strap, and the portion beyond the preferation is passed through the loop 14, as shown in Fig. 1, in which the two portions of the strap are indicated at B and C respectively and their respective perforations at B and C.
What is claimed is:
1. As an article of manufacture, a repair buckle comprising a rectangular frame including side portions and connecting end portions, a central transverse pivot bar formed integral with the side portions, and having a reduced central portion, said side portions having their central portions offset upwardly to throw the end portions below the plane of the pivot bar, said side portions having upwardly turned extensions beyond one end portion, a connecting top member formed integral with said extensions, a
ongue having an end bent into an eye and engaged with the reduced portion of the pivot bar 'for pivotal movement of the tongue thereupon, and a second tongue having a bifurcated end and resultant spaced portions, y
said spaced portions being bent to form eyes and engaged With the pivot bar at opposite sides of the Iirst' named tongue, said tongues being movable upon the pivot bar to bring their free ends into and out of engagement with the end portions of the frame.
2. In a buckle, the combination With a frame including side portions land a connecting transverse pivot bar having a re duced central portion, of a tongue having one end bent to form an eye pivotally engaged With said reduced portion ci the bar7 and a second tongue having a bifurcated end and resultant spaced portion, said spaced portion 15 being bent to form eyes pivotally engaged with the pivot bar at opposite sides of the iirst mentioned tongue.
In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
