DOOR CHECK .AND TIGHTENER.'
Specification of Letters acerit.A
Patented Dec. 24, 1907.
Application tiled September 17.1907. Serial No. 3934295.
To all whom'itmcy concern: k 'l Be it known that lI, EDWARD CONKLIN7 a citizen of the United States, residing at Channahon, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented'certain new .and useful Improvements lin vDoor Checks and i Tigliteners, of which the following is a specig ication. i
This invention appertains to means for securing a door and at the same time holdf ing the same within the frameor easement prevent rattle Yor play which is ob.- i e in cold and windy weather. n The invention-consists of a spring actuated plunger and a coperating socket, said plunger being mounted in a casing which Vin equipped with the' device.
For a Jfull understanding of. the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of con-- struction of the means for eiiecting the re sul-t, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which: Y
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a the application of the invention, Fig. 2 is ahorizontal section on the line xof Fig. 2l. F ig. 3 is a detailed perspective view ofl the socket fitting. u Fig. 4 is a detail view in ated plunger. Fig. 5, is a detail perspective view of the spring actuated plunger.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indi-l cated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The check, stop, or holder comprises two parts, one a socket, the other a casing and a spring actuated lplunger mounted withinL said casing. The socket consists of a plate 1 of oblong formation and provided at opposite ends with o eningsl to receive screws or astenings for iolding the socket in place. l.
An inclined lug v2 .rejects from an edge of the plate 1, the inclined side facing outward .xp for the .spring -actuated plunger, to ride l upon lwhen closing the door to which the invention is fitted. A. hess orfcircular projectionA SAeXtends from the rear side of the l plate 1 and .a depression tformed 1n. the plate 1 extends into the said boss or'pro 1e tion 3 and forms the socket proper in which theprojecting end of the spring actuated i plunger ts.' The socket or depression 4 1s l the face of the jainb or like part.
` length of the plate 1.
located opposite to the inclined lug kZand i its opposite walls flare slightlv to admit of the plunger riding thereon when applying the jamb' or other part *f which it is fitted so as to come flush -uponl its outerside with l The spring actuated plunger consists oie stem 5 forked atene end kto receive a pulley wheel,6, the stem being angular" and having a shoulder rnear its rinner end'to .form an l abutmentv at one end for a coil spring S mountedupon said stem and coniined bepin 11 is fitted jecting end of the stem 5 and limits the out-- ward movement of the plunger. The casin i' 10 is of cylindrical formation and is provided at one end with opposite ears 12 which are apertured to receive the screws or fastenings employed for holding the casing in place. The casing'l() is let into a mortise or opening formed in an edge of the door or other part to which it is applied so that the outer face of the ears and edge ofthe door come l'lush. By, having the stem made angular incross section and fitted in a corresponding opening formed in the inner end of the casing 10 the plunger is prevented from turning, thereby holding the pulley' wheel 6 in a plane at a right angle to the line ot the ears 12 so that it will maintain a given position to ride upon the inclined lug 2 and enter the socket or depression 4 with its axis in line with the l When applying vthe invention to a door the socket fitting is let into the vdoor 'amb with the inclined lug 2 facing outwar and the 'casing 1() receiving the spring actuating plunger isi-fitted into an opening 1n the'edge tween the shoulder 7 and a shoulder 9 at the i inner end of the casing 10.
1n a transverse opening formed 1n the proof .the door in suchrelative position that y when the'door is closed the two parts of the device comeopposito each other thereby ena ling the projecting end of the spring actuated plunger rto enter the socket or depression 4. n
lt is to hc understood that the check or holder ma) be variousl)v employed in connection with relatively moving parte to be held vin a given'position -i'ree romcasual opening.
'liheniitted to a door the device is located a short distance from either the top or the bottom edge of said door, thereby securing gley Wheel., and a coil spring mounted upon the same between the stops so as to prevent any play which is of advantage in cold 'and Windy Weather.
Havin thus described thev invention, What is c aimed as new is:
l. In a fastener of the character specied the combination ofa casing havin one end closed and provided with an angu ar opening, a plunger slidably fitted Within said cas? ing and comprising an angular stern fitting the angular openin of said casing and having its opposite eng forked to receive a pulthe plunger "and confined between a shoulder thereof and a corresponding shoulder at one g end of the said casing. g
2. A fastening of the character substan tially as specified the Same comprising two I ndrical projection and an inclined lug and aving a depression formin a socket, the other part comprising a cy indrical casing closed at one end and havin an angular openin formed therein, and aving oppositely isposed ears a't its opposite ends, and a spring actuated plunger mounted in said casing and com rising an angular stem forked at one en to receive a ulley wheel and having its an ular portion fritted in said an ular opening o the casing. n testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
