GLOTHES LIFTER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 14,1907.

Patented Dec. 24, 1907.
Application filed June 14. 1907. Serial No. 378,944. V
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Clothes-Lifters; and I do doc are the follo to be a full, clear, and exact description 0 the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention. relates to improvements in lifters and may be otherwise termed a clothes lifter.
The object of the invention is to rovide a lifter for removing laundry from oilers. The implement is also adapted to a variety of other uses, for example, in dyeing establishments where fabrics are immersed in rece tacles containing the dye-stuff, etc.
the drawingsFigure 1, represents a view of the lifter showing the two gripping members in their normal position. Flg. 2, is a view at right angles to Fig. 3, is an end view of the head with parts broken away. Fig. 4, is a detail view of the inner side of one of the arms or gripping members adjacent to the head. In a detail description of the invention,
similar reference characters indicate correon arts. Thi a riiis or gripping members 1 have their gripping ends 2v curved inwardly and provided with flat engaging surfaces which owing to their constructlon do not pierce or otherwise mutilate the fabrics. These gripping arms or members are preferably constructed of wood, such material being least affected by the liquids or chemicals in which,
the lifter is inserted in handling the fabrics;
wood is otherwise preferable, owing to its The ends of these being lighter than metal. gripping arms or members 1 termm' ate in ca s 1 of greater width or thickness than the gripping ends 2, the entire length of said members being tapered from these heads to the gripping ends. Attached to the outer sides 0 the head portions of the said members, is a late spring 4 which extends in a substanti y semi-circular head 5 which lies I beyond the ends 3 of the-heads. This outer spring provides a hand portion by which the implement is manipulated, and in addition thereto it provides the necessary resiliency to assist in maintaining the grip ing members normally separated. This p ate spring 4 so curved is of a width equal to that of the gripping member or arms 1 throughout its engfih. l 7 esignates an inner ate s secured to the inner sides of the head p r izi ns of the pping arms or members 1, and extending 0m one arm to the other in a convolute or head 6 which lies be 0nd the ends of the gripping members. his inner late s 7 is also of the samewidth as t e gri gii g arms or members, and together wit the head 5 of the outer spring forms a substantial attachment uniting the ends of the gri ping arms. The head or convolute 6 of t e inner spring contacts with the inner side of the head 5 of the outer spring and is rigidly attached thereto by a rivet 8 which maintains said spring in rigid connection.
9 designates a slotted guide plate secured to one side of the inner spring and the adjacent member. This plate has an elongate slot 10 which penetrates a slot 14 in the other side of the inner spring and a slot 13 in the adjacent gripping member, said end so projected in said slots being nlllaintained thereiln by a pin ll inserted in t e gripping mem er across the o e 13. This pin 11 engages the end of the silo t l d and maintains the gri arms or members normally in the posltlon shown in Fig. 1; The guide plate 9 also provides a substantial means for preventing the gri ping members or arms from having any lateral or side movements and insures the two arms m0 always in alinement in manipulating the deof said spri s being equal to the widths of the combined action of the. two springs, as the arms, a s ottedlate having one end atherein shown and described. A tached to the inner eaf spring and the other In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, end penetrating a slot in t e other side of. the in presence of two witnesses.
