Description

No. 874,494. PATENTED DEC. 24, 1907.
J. D. PRBESE.
PACKING PAD nrmouzon FILED MAR. 19, 1907.
JOHN D. FREESE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PACKING-PAD. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed Mareh'19.1907- Serial No. 363.232.
Patented Dec. 24, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN'D. FREEsE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, Cook county, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Pads, of which the following is a specification,
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved form of packingpad which is particularly designed for strength, cheapness ofmanufacture and convenience in applying it to-furniture and similar articles which are to be packed for shipment; to avoid the expense and inconvenience of using burlap in wrapping tow or excelsior around furniture; and to save muchof the labor which is now required in packing furniture in the old way by first applying paper to the varnished or finished surface, then applying tow or excelsior and then tyingburlap on the outside.
Another object of the inve'ntionis to provide a packing which can be cheaply made in large rolls or strips suitable to be cut up into the desired lengths, and to be readily applied without skilled labor.
Another object is to provide a packing which is more even and compact than the old forms 'in common use, and is stronger than other paper covered packings which "might be used without burla 'lh'ese objects are accomplished by the device shown in the accompanying drawings in which i Figure 1 is a top plan of a packing pad constructed according to this invention, the upper covering bein partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a longitudinaIsection on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. .3 is a cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a wash-stand having the packing applied' thereto.
"lhe'packing shown consists ofatop layer of aper 1, and bottom-la er of paper 2,the
filling 3, of tow, excelsior, ay, straw or similar material, and aplurality of cords 4, which extend longitudinally of the packing immediately under the top layer ofpaper 1. These cords are pasted under said top layer and both of said layers of paper are pasted upon the filling 3. i
The packing will be applied as shown in Fig. 4 by fastening the same with staples 5 at the back or unfinished part of the furniture. The layer 2 of paper will be inside, or next to the furniture. The cords .5 thus form strengthening bands which pass outside of ate the necessity of winding cords around the entire packin as is now done with the old forms of packlng. If the back surface of the furniture is also finished, the pad can be passed entirely around the same and tied in the usual manner, or the over-lapping parts of the packing and the cords may be secured by stitching.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A wrapping and packing pad comprising an upper and lower sheet, a filling of packing material secured between said sheets, and a plurality of cords securedbetween said filling and the upper sheet without passing through the filling, said cords extending toward each end of the pad and bein arranged to prevent longitudinal stretc ling thereof. i p
2. A packing pad comprising an upper and lower sheet, a filling of packing material secured between said sheets and a pluralityof sheet pasted upon sai layer, and a plurality of cords held entirely between saidsheet and 1 packing material and extending toward each end of the pad, said cords being arranged so as 50 prevent longitudinal stretching of the pa 4. A wrapping and packin pad comprising a fillingof packing materia two covering sheets pasted upon opposite sides of said filling, and a plurality of cords held entirely between said filling and one of said sheets and extending towardeach end of the pad, said cords being arranged, so as to prevent longitudinal stretching of the pad.
5. A packing pad comprising a filling of Signed at Chicago this 14th day of March packing material, two coverin sheets pasted 1907. upon opposite sides of said filhng, and a plurality of cords secured to the inner surface of JOHN E 5 one of the covering sheets and extending in Witnesses:
straight lines from end to end thereof be- FLORENCE MAHONEY, tween said sheet and said filling. WM. R. RUMMLER.
