ROBERT WILFRED SCHWAB, 0F- ATLANl.A, GEORGIA.
MATTRESS PACKAGE.
Application filed September 20, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT W. SCHWAB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattress Packages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full. clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to special packages and more particularly to mattress packages.
Objects of the invention are to provide a sealed mattress package such that a mattress may be shipped from the factory and delivered to the purchaser, sound, dry and uncontaminated; to enable mattresses to be shipped and stored in a package that is compact and economical of storage space, may be easily handled, does not invite the use of hooks by freight handlers and is not likely to be torn or marred; to provide a mattress package that will keep moisture from the mattress when the package is standing on a wet floor and that will maintain its position on a floor or platform, and requires the minimum of protective material.
The invention consists in the peculiar con struction and combination described in the ensuing specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings in which like reference numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved package;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 with one closure removed from the casing or carton disclosing the rolled mattress within;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the improved package standing on end;
Figure 4 is a similar perspective of another form of the improved package.
In Figures 1, 2 and 3, A indicates a carton or casing as a whole, said carton being made of paper board or like fibrous lead or felted material which may be bent but is of sufficient rigidity to retain its form and Of SUillcient strength to resist rupture 1n ordinary handling. The tubular body 1 of the carton may be made of a single sheet of paper board having two edges abutting and secured together in any desired manner. I
cemented over the Serial No. 501,942.
have shown said edges at 2 held in place by a strip of cloth, tough paper, or the like 3, cemented over the seam formed by said abutting edges as indicated at 3. The tubular body 1 of the carton is of such shape that it conforms substantially to the contour of a snugly rolled mattress 4. The embodiment illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3 is in the form of a rectangular, symmetrical, ten
sided prism the base and top each forming a regular decagon. Each end of the tubular body 1 is provided with a closure 5 inset within the upper and lower edges, respectively. Each of said closures 5 corresponds in outline with the cross section of the tubular body and may be dished or provided with a flange 6 about its perimeter. The closures, 5 with their flanges 6 are set into the ends of the tubular body and secured in 7 5 place by flat wire stitching 7, which is passed through the flanges6 of the closures and the edge portions 8 of the tubular body. A snugly rolled mattress 4, inserted endwise in the carton, tends to expand and conform. so
substantially to the form of the tubular body. The rolled, expanded mattress, sub stantially filling the tubular body, assists the wall thereof to resist impact tending to break or penetrate said wall. The plane facets 9 of the prismatic carton shown in Figures 1 to 3 prevent the package from rolling when lying on a floor or platform on its side. By forming a carton with six or more facets its wall substantially conforms to the exterior form of a rolled mattress and at the same time overcomes the tendency of the package to roll on the floor when laid on its side.
In Figure 4 there is shown a cylindrical and secured in any suitable way, as by a strip of cloth, tough paper or the like 13 seam. The flanged closures 15 of the cylindrical carton may be died or pressed from paper or pulp-board and inset within the end edges of the tubular body 11. When so inset a flange of double thickness will be formed at the ends of the package through which fiat wire 7 may be stitched to secure the closures in place.
The improved packages described are sub- 11o stantially sealed so that dust cannot enter. The mattress does not have to be wrapped in sheeti 11" paper to pro"ect it from dirt. The pacc is a conven cut one for shippin and handlin lne la at each end enable it to be SSIZGCl by the and car ried about nth case; there is, therefore, nothing to invite the careless use of bale hooks. flanges reinforced by stout flat iv ire U tches enable the package to be stood on end in such manner as to keep the mattress out of contact With moisture on the floor. The is such as to require the possible quantity of paper board to enclos a mattress. The entire makeup of the package is such as to insure the shipment and delivery of a mattress from t r16 factory to the consumer in perfect, sanitary condition. in order to remove the mattress the strip coveri the seam in the tubular body may be ripped off or slit with a knife.
By the term paper board I mean relatively st 3 sheet material made of fibrous substances by the usual paper making processes such so-called corrugated board, fiber board, binder board, pulp board, and the like.
What It claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A mattress package consisting of a rolled mattress encased in a sealed pap 1' board carton substantially conforming the contour of the rolled mattress.
2. A mattress package consisting of rolled mattress encased in a sealed paper board carton substantially conforming to e to 1 asses the contour of the rolled mattress, said carton having at least one plane facet on its exterior.
3. A mattress package consisting of a rolled mattress encased in a sealed paper board carton substantially conforming to the contour of the rolled mattress, said carton having a plurality of plane facets on its exterior.
4-. A mattress package consisting of rolled mattress encased in a sealed paper board carton substantially conforming to the contour of the rolled mattress, said oarton having inset end closures providing a fian e at each end.
5. A mattress package consisting of a rolled mattress encased in a sealed paper board carton substantially conforming to the contour of the rolled mattress, said carton having flanged inset end closures providing a multiply flange at each end of the package.
6. A mattress package consisting of a rolled mattress encased in a sealed paper board carton substantially conforming to the contour of the rolled mattress, said carton having flanged inset end closures providing a multiply flange at each end of the package said end closure 8 being secured in place by flat Wire'stitching penetrating the two plys of the flanges.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. I
ROBERT WILFRED SGHWAB.
