G. A. LYON BUMPER PACKAG E Filed May 21, 1921 Patented Apr W, i923.
GEORGE AER EH31 LYON, F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BUIL ER PACKAGE.
Application filed may 21, 1921. Qerial No. 471,376.-
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, GEORGE ALBERT LYON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have made a certain new and useful Invention Relating to Bumper Packages, of which the following is a specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms part of the same.
This invention relates especially to sep arable multiple unit packages for shipping strip metal articles, such as automobile bumpers or buffers of the Lyon type hav ing the general structure described and covered by the Lyon Patents No. 1,198,246 of September 12, 1916, and No. 1,266,836 of May 21, 1918, although of course, other makes or styles of bumpers or generally similar articles may be shipped in; this type of package. The package may comprise any desired number of units or boxes, some at least of such boxes preferably having sides projecting be ond the outer faces of the cooperating on members to which they are secured so as to form end recesses, in which connector strips or members of wood may be nailed so as to securely connect six or so of such boxes or units which are piled on top of one another, so as to form a multiple unit package convenient for handling and in which the units mutually reenforce and protect each other.- The consignee may separate such a multiple unit package by sawing apart or otherwise severing these connectors along lines which may be marked, weakened, or scored for such purposes, so
that the original multiple unit package may be divided into two or more packages each of which may contain one or more units or boxes. The wooden strips which form the sides or ends of the open unit frame or box may be closed by top and bottom covers of any suitable material such as paper board, including straw board, paste board or fibre board, or, if desired, of thin veneering or laminated wood. Where as is desirable paper board covers "are used for this purpose, it is advantageous to secure or nail retainer strips of wood over these covers at each side of the box or unit, where they can be conveniently nailed to the box sides along the lengths of these members, so as to cooperate with and hold in the ends or other parts of the metal strip bumper elements which are preferably disconnected and Wrapped or rotected by windings of paper, etc. It is a so desirable in many cases to provide a specialsmall compartment in the unit or box to contain parts of the articles, such as hook bolts or other attaching devices, and this may be efiectively arranged by nailing or securing one or more connected inner sides of this compartment in one corner of the unit or box preferably beneath the edge retainer strips, so that a complete inner wooden box may thus be formed for these loose parts or small pieces. lln the accompanying drawing showing in a somewhat diagrammatic way an illustrative embodiment of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view partly in section and showing a multiple unit package composed of four boxes or units; and
Fig. 2 is an end section thereof, taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Automobile bumpers or buffers of this Lyon type may, as indicated in Fig. 1, comprise two generally similar spring steel strips or members, each of which includes an impact receiving member adapted to extend across the front of the automobile which merges into an end loop to which is connected one of the attaching members 22 of the bumper extending transversely of the impact receiving member in the package. These resilient steel strip members may for shipping purposes be advantageously wrapped or Wound with protecting strips and arranged as indicated in Fig. 1 with each attaching member pointing toward the other impact receiving member and adjacent thereto. The box or package unit which should fit as closely as convenient around these heavy strip members, weighing from twenty to thirty pounds or more for each bumper may comprise wood box sides and ends nailed or secured together in any suitable way, preferably so that the ends of the end members such as 27 project three-fourths of an inch or so beyond the adjacent faces of the side members 1 and 16. Covers 14, 15 of thin sheet protecting material such as paper board, etc., may be secured to the top and bottom faces of the box or unit and so give the necessary strength and reliability and hold the covers in place, wood strip retainers such as a, 5 are preferably secured over each cover at the sides of the box where they can be conveniently nailed or secured to the box sides and securely retain the bumper strips lit in position. These retainer strips may of course, be securely nailed to the box sides adjacent the bumper attaching members and elsewhere, so that the box is greatly reenforced against the tendency of the metal strip bumper members to work out duringshipping or handling, while at the same time the cost and weight of the package is minimized to the greatest extent consistent with its strength and reliability. In many cases it is quite desirable to h-ave an inner compartment for bumper attachlng members or other parts of the article and this may be conveniently provided in this construction by nailing one or more inner partitions into one end of the box or unit, so as to make a complete wooden box or inner compartment. As shown in Fig. 1, the wooden partitions 7 may be nailed between the inner edges of the retainer strips 3, 5 at one side of the box and by extending in contact with or closely adjacent the cooperating attaching member 22, this attachin member may in some cases form the en of this inner compartment in which hook bolts or other attaching devices may be packed or placed for shipment as indicated in Fig. 2.
Any desired number of such boxed bumpers or package units may be iled up one on top of another up to the maxlmum weight of package desired, dependent of course on the requirements of the particular customer and four, six or more of such bumper unit ackages may be piled up as indicated in ig. 1, and connected or secured together by outside connector strips so that they mutually strengthen and protect each other during shipment. For this purpose severable wood strip connectors as 10, may be nailed or otherwise secured to each of the units, referably by nailing them into the angle ormed by the projectin ends 28 of the box ends 27, so that consi erable additional strength is thus given to each unit at this oint of juncture as well as firmly and reliably connecting the difierent units of the multiple package, in which the adjacent retainer strips such as 2, 4 and 5 come into close bearing contact as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. Such multiple unit package may after. shipment be divided or separated into two or more packages by sawing through or otherwise severing the strip connectors at the desired points where they may be marked, creased or weakened in some cases, so as to be readily cut through as by the saw 26 indicated in dotted lines, so that several packages may thusbe conveniently formed containing any desired number of bumpers which are still boxed and ready for such further shipment as may be necessary. This is of course a great convenience for jobbers and other distributers who can divide the original packages into smaller ones for further shipment to their customers, thus avoiding the very great annoyance and expense in recrating such bumpers when they are ship ed in individual paste board boxes enclosed in wood packing cases;
This invention has been described in connection with a number of illustrative forms,
proportions, parts, units, articles, arrangements and methods of preparation and use, to the details of which disclosure the invention is not of course to be limited, since what is claimed as new and what is desired to be comprising resilient strip members adjacent said sides and having the end of each transversely extending connected attaching member arranged adjacent the other impact receiving member, paper board covers on the top and bottom faces of said unit and wooden retainer strips secured outside of said covers at each side of said unit and nailed to said sides to cooperate with and retain the ends of said impact receiving members and attaching members, an inner wooden partition member extending between one of said attaching members and the box end and nailed to the adjacent retainer strips to form an inner wooden compartment within said unit to contain attaching devices and separable wood strip connectors nailed to said units within the angle former by the projecting ends of said box ends to form a multiple unit package in which the units mutually reenforce and protect each other.
2. The separable multiple unit package for automobile bumpers or the like, comprising a plurality of vertically iled units each comprising wooden sides an cooperating ends secured thereto, each unit containing the disconnected parts of an automobile bumper comprising resilient strip members adjacent said sides and having the end of each transversely extending connecting attaching member arran ed adjacent the other impact receiving mem r, paper board covers on the top and bottom faces of said unit and wooden retainer strips secured outside of said covers at each side of said unit and nailed to said sides to cooperate with and retain the ends of said impact receiving members and attaching members an inner wooden partition member nailed. to the adjacent retainer strips to form an inner compartment within said unit to contain attaching devices and separable wood strip connectors nailed to said units toform a memes multiple unit peckege in which the units mutually reenforce end protect eech other.
