TOOL on APPLYING FASTENING nnvrcns r SPLIT cARNA'rIoNs, &c.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1907.
Application filed January 7, 1907. Serial No. 351.058.
To all whom it may concern: j
Be it known that I, ARMIN J. BAUR, a citizen of the United States, residing in Mill Creek township, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tools for Applying Fastening Devices to Split Carnations and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools for applying fastening devices to split carnations and the like and consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof as will.be herein after fully described and pointed outin the claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawings as follows: Figure 1 shows a-split carnation. Fig. 2 the same flower with the fastening applied with the tool which is the subject matter of this invention. Fig. 3, an elevation of the fastener. Fig- {1, an end view of the tool. Fig. 5, a side elevation of the same. Fig. 6, a bottom view of the tool.
1 marks the stem of-the flower, 2 the calyx, 3 the petals and 4 the fastener. The fastener comprises the base portion 5, the ton ue 6 arranged intermediate the ends, anc the prongs 7. tionary jaw 8 from which extends the shank 9 approximately at right angles to thc'jaw and the'haridle 10.
The movable, jaw .11 is pivoted on the fixed jaw at 12 and. has the slot 13 atits rear end. The shank 14 is piv oted at 15 on the shank 9', the end of the shank 14 extending into the slot 13 so as to operate the jaw 1.1. A handle 16 is provided for operating the shank 14 and a spring 17 tends to hold the jaws in an open. position] The jaws have the transverse grooves or slots 18 and 19 near the ends thereof which are adapted to engage and hold the fastener in the mannerclcarly shQW 'i gthe fastener being in position in the acres shown in this figure. The front of the jaw 8 is grooved or bifurcated, being provided with prongs at the sides, the purpose of which is together and guide the petals as the tool is placed in position on the flower.
The tool has the relatively sta- In operation, the fastener is picked up by the tool from aflat surface, and the jawS is placed within the calyx, the petals being guided by the grooved end 20. The edges of the calyx are then forced in between the jaws and over the base 5 of the fastener. The jaws are then closed, forcing the prongs 7 over the edges of the calyx and clamping the same thereon.
What I claim as new is:
1. A tool for applying fastening devices to split carnations and i the like, comprising pincer jaws, one of which is adapted to be pressed Within the calyx, said jaw being proinserted within the calyx and having the pronged end for guiding the petals as it is inserted; and handles for operating the jaws arranged approximately at right angles to the jaws.
3. A tool for applying fastening devices to split carnations and the like comprising thejaw 8, the shank 9 secured to the jaw 8 and approximately at right angles thereto; the handle 10; the jaw 11 pivoted at 12 on the jaw 8 and having the grooved end 13; the shank 14 pivoted on the shank 9 at 15 and acting in the groove 13; the handle 16 for the shank 1 1, the jaw 8 being provided with the groove 20 on its face and the jaws 8 and 11 having transverse grooves 18 and 19 near their ends for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ARMIN J. BAUR.
