Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AOHILL WALTER BRAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boise, in the county of Ada, State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tops for Ranges, of which the following is a description, reference being had. to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in range lids or covers for ordinary cooking stoves or for commercial ranges such as used in hotels and restaurants and the like.

Said invention consists in a cover which has a portion thereof capable of being slid horizontally for the purpose of rendering direct access to the fire-box.

My invention consists further in a cover which may be moved horizontally and which also may be readily detached from the stove top when in closed position.

My invention consists still further in the arts, arrangements and improvements hereinafter shown, described and specified in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings which show one embodiment of my invention :Figure 1 is a top perspective view of a stove provided with my improved cover. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken through the central part of said stove top. Fig. 4 is a separated perspective view showing the under side of the parts of the cover and their relation to each other and the stove top.

In the drawings, the stove or range 1 has the usual front 2, back 3 and ends 4, 4. Secured to these side and end portions is the top frame 5. Said parts may be made integral or secured together in any suitable manner. The frame 5 is provided with a rectangular opening extending substantially throughout the entire top of the range or stove. Ex tending around inside of said rectangular opening is a ledge 6, which forms a means for supporting the members of my improved sectional top. Said top which fits in and closes the opening in the frame 5 is preferably composed of two end sections 7 and 8 and two fire box cover sections 9, and 10.

The part 7 is rectangular in outline and is provided with the projecting rib 11 on three sides thereof, which rests upon the ledge 6 of the frame. This part is so proportioned that when seated upon the ledge 6, the upper face thereof is substantially flush with the top of the frame 5. The member 8 is similar in construction to the member 7 and is provided with a ledge 12 on three sides thereof, which also fits upon the ledge or seat 6.

The cover sections members or lids 7 and 8, are so proportioned that when placed in the rectangular opening of the frame 5 there is left between the same a rectangular 0 ening which extends over the top of the fire ox. The member 7 is provided with a ledge 13 and the member 8 is provided with a corresponding ledge 14 which serves to support t e cover or lid portions 9 and 10.

The section 9 of the cover or lid is rovided with a flange 15 which extends a ong the sides and across the back of said section 9. This flange 15 fits upon the ledges 13 and 14 on the cover sections 7 and 8 and also the ledge 6 on the frame. This flange is so proportioned that the cover portion 9 is substantially flush with the sections 7 and 8 and also the top of the frame 5.

The cover portion 10 is provided with flanges 16, 16 which fit upon the ledges 13 and 14 and serve as a means for supporting said cover 10. The frame 5 at the front side is cut away as at 17 and is provided with ledges 18, 18 which register with and form an extension of the ledges 13 and 14 upon the parts 7 and 8. The cover section 10 extends to the front edge of the frame 5 and the flanges 16 rest upon the ledges 18. It will be seen that by this construction the cover section 10 may slide horizontally in the plane of the cover and frame. The flanges 16 are so proportioned that the top of the cover 10 is substantially flush with the other parts of the top of the range.

' I have rovided the cover 10 with a suitable hancfle 19 whereby the cover may be moved backward and forward. This handle as shown in the drawing is formed rigidly with the cover. It is apparent however, that any kind of handle may be substituted for the one herein shown.

The ledges 13 and 14 are provided with notches 20 and 21 respectively. The cover section 10 is provided with a retaining member 22 which has its free ends 23 and 24 extending outwardly transverse of the cover and underneath the ledges 13 and 14. This member 22 maybe cast as a part of the cover section 10 or may be made separate and secured thereto by a suitable screw such as 25. The outer ends of said member 22 are preferably rounded off so as to avoid sharp points which might catch upon the parts of the stove top. When the cover portion 10 is in its closed position the free ends 23 and 24 of the retaining member 22 register with the notches 20 and 21 in the ledges 13, and 14. In this position the cover section 10 may be lifted from the stove top. When however, the cover section 10 is drawn forward as shown in Fig. 1, the retaining member 22 engages beneath the ledges 13 and 14 and 1 thus prevents the cover section 10 from being removed from the stove to and also holds the same in a horizonta position. This member 22 furthermore serves as a sto so that when the cover section 10 is pu ed outward the member 22 will engage the frame of the stove top and prevent the pulling of the cover 10 entirely off the stove top.

It will be noted that I have provided an improved cover for the fire box which consists of two pieces 9 and 10 and that the sec tion 10 takes the place of the feed box now in use as well as the old fashioned circular lids which from their construction produce a top having a weak central portion. It will be noted further that the cover 10 may be slid forward giving access to the central portion of the fire box. Also the member 9 may be slid forward giving access to the rear portion of the fire box. In fact, the member 9 may be readily removed and the member 10 moved out to its extreme outward posi- 1t)ion, thereby giving access to the entire fire The covers or plates-9 and 10 may also be used as regulators of the supply of air to the fire box by moving the same back and forth and in their various positions they will remain horizontal giving a smooth unobstructed top surface to the stove. Furthermore, with my improved covers the same may be slightly opened so that all fumes from fatty substances like meats and fish which are being broiled on top of the stove may be drawn down into the fire box and consumed without in any manner disturbing the proc ess of cooking.

The retaining member 22 as shown in the drawing is a yielding member secured to the under side of the movable cover 10 and near the outer ends of said retaining member 22 I have provided screws 26, 26 which pass through openings at the outer end ofsaid retaining members 22. The object of these screws is to limit the downward movement of said retaining member. member is cast as a part of the movable cover, the retaining means of course, would not be yielding and the screws 26, 26jwould be omitted. 1

Having thus particularly described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a range or stove top, a fixed frame, removable end sections supported thereby, and an approximately central sectional cover supported partly by the end sections and partly by the frame.

2. In a range or stove top, a fixed frame, removable end sections supported thereby, and a sectional cover slidably mounted on said end sections and movable to expose the fire-box.

3. In a range or stove top, a fixed frame, removable end sections supported thereby and having their adjacent ends spaced from.

each other, and a slidably mounted cover formed of inner and outer sections supported by the end sections, the frame being recessed to permit outward movement of the outer cover section to expose the fire-box.

4. In a range or stove top, a fixed frame having a centrally disposed recess at the front, removable end sections supported by the frame, the adjacent edges of said sections being spaced from each other a distance approximately equal to the width of the recess, and a slidable cover section movable through the recess and supported partly by the end sections and partly by the frame.

5. In a range or stove top, a fixed frame having at its central front portion a recess the opposing walls of which are provided with ledges, removable end sections supported by the frame, the adjacent ends of said end sections being spaced from each other and provided with ledges in alinement with those of the recess, and slidably mounted covers supported by said ledges.

6. In a range or stove top, a fixed frame having a centrally disposed recess at the front, the opposing vertical walls of said recess being provided with ledges, end sections mounted in the frame and having their adjacent ends spaced from each other and provided with ledges in alinement with those of the recess, the ledges of said end sections being slotted, and a slidable cover mounted on the ledges and provided with projections insertible through the slots, said projections serving as stops which limit outward sliding movement of said cover.

7. In a range or stove top, a fixed frame having a centrally disposed recess at the front, the opposing walls of said recess having ledges, removable end sections mounted in the frame, the adjacent ends of said end sections being spaced from each other and being provided with ledges in alinement with those of the recess, a pair of slidable cover sections mounted on the ledges, the outermost cover section fitting 1 partly in the recess, and its upper face being ush with the top of the frame.

In a range or stove top, a fixed frame having a centrally disposed front recess, the opposed Walls of which are provided with ledges, the inner Wall of the frame being'further provided With a practically continuous ledge, removable end sections sup orted by the ledge at the inner Wall of the i' rame, the adjacent edges of such end sections being spaced from each other, and provided with ledges in alinement With those of the recess, said ledges having vertical slots, a rear cover section supported partly by the ledge of the frame and the ledges of the end sections, a front cover section supported partly by the ledges of the recess and partly by the ledges of the end sections, and projections extending laterally from said outer cover section 20 ACHILL WALTER BRAND.
