and for supporting the cover in an elevated position so that it will serve as a splash back or plate at the rear edge of the cooking top portion of the range.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of an improved and novel hinge and supporting mechanism for a combined burner cover and stove splash back.

A further object of the invention is the provision of an improved hinge and support for a cover for the cooking top portion of a range which is so constructed as to be completely concealed from view when the cover is in a lowered position.

Another and still further object of the invention is the provision of a movable cover for the burners of the cooking top portion of a range which is provided with an integrally formed rear guard at its rear edge.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of adevice having the attributes heretofore mentioned, which is simple and cheap of V manufacture and highly efiicient in operation.

Having reference now to the. drawings which are illustrative ofthe inventive concept as applied to the particular type of stove or range illustrated, it will be seen that the stove comprises an oven compartment A provided at its front with the usual door 5 to permit access to the compartment. A burner chamber 6 is superimposed upon the oven compartment and is defined at its upper end by a rectangular top burner frame B carrying a plurality of grids 7 which are positioned above the burners (not shown) which, as is the common practice, are positioned within the cooking top burner chamber 6.

The cooking top B throughout its periphery has a depending vertically disposed flange 8 which is in separated parallel relation to the side walls of the oven compartment, as clearly illustrated in the upper i of the ,cover.

This flange at the iron edge of the cooking top is shown as being detachable but inasmuch as this particular feature forms no part of the present invention no detailed description of this particular detachable portion of the flange will be here given. A movable cover which is for the combined purpose of concealing the top burners and the burner grids when the cover is in a lowered position and for forming a splash plate or back at the rear edge of the cooking top when the cover is in an elevated position is designated as an entirety at .C. This cover is of a more or less pan shape in that it has a fiat portion 10 having at its front and side edges a comparatively shallow or narrow marginal flange 11. Adjacent its rear edge the fiat portion of the cover is bulged upwardly as indicated at 12 to form at the rear of the cover a transversely extending narrow housing and back guard having a top wall 13 and a rear wall 14. The cover C is of a shape similar to that of the top burner frame. - I To complete the hinges there is a second U- sh'ap ed meinber 18 the end walls or ears '19 of which extend in a direction toward the cover and the rear end of the cooking top. These members housing formed 18 are provided with a horizontally disposed bot-- tom plate or member 20 which rest upon the rear edge of the cooking top frame and have a downwardly bent rear end portion 21 which parallels the flange 8 of the cooking top at its rear. A suitable bolt or screw 22 is used to clamp the bottom plate 20 to the cooking top to secure the hinge portions 18 rigidly in place. C

As will be evident from the drawings the U- shaped members 15 carried by the cover telescope the U-shaped members 18 of the hinge carried by the cooking top. This puts the extending ears or ends 1'7 and 19 in overlapping parallel relation and they are pivotally secured together in this relation by means of suitable rivets or pins 23.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the hinge construction thus defined pivotally supports the cover at the rear edge of the cooking top. Attention is called to the fact that the dimensions of the U-shaped members forming the hinge are such that they lie wholly within the housing at the rear edge of the cover which is defined by the bulged rear edge of the cover and the flanges 11 at the side edges of the cover. As a consequence when the cover is lowered the entire hinge is within this housing and concealed completely from View.

The bulge in the rear edge of the cover C in addition to forming a housing for concealing the hinge serves the purpose of a guard and acts as a stop to prevent utensils or kitchenware from falling or being accidentally pushed over the back edge of the cover when the cover is in a lowered position. It will be understood that when the cover is down the stove can be used like a table and hence the bulged portion of the cover forms a guard and stop at the rear edge of the table top.

A cover such as described is preferably made of sheet metal although otherv suitable material could be used to advantage.

When the cover is elevated it serves as a splash back or plate at the rear edge of the stove cooking top to protect the wall from being soiled from smoke, steam, greases etc. For the purpose of holding the cover firmly in a vertical or elevated position a supporting arm 24 is provided. This arm at its upper end is pivotally attached as at 25 to the inner face of the cover flange 11 or an extension 11' thereof while the opposite end of the arm extends through an elevated slot 26 provided in the cooking top frame B. The lower end of the arm is bent at right angles as indicated at 27 which prevents any accidental removal of this end of the arm from the slot. Adjacent the bent lowerend the frame is provided with an arcshaped indenture or cut-out portion 28 which is of a size to receive and overlie the end of a suitable bolt or stud 29 secured by a nut 30 to the depending flange 8 of the cooking top frame. It will be evident by reference to Figure 3 of the drawings that when the cover is raised to a vertical position the cut-out portion at the lower end of the arm will engage and overlie the bolt 29 and rigidly support the cover. To release the support its lower end is moved toward the front of the stove which disengages the arm from the bolt and permits the cover to be lowered into the position illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawings.

By reference to Figure 4 of the drawings it will be seen that the point of pivotal connection of the supporting arm with the cover and the positioning of the bolt or stub shaft 29 are such in relation to one another that when the cover is lowered the supporting arm is supported by the stub shaft or stop in approximately a horizontal position beneaththe cooking top frame and completely concealed from view beneath it and behind the depending vertical flange 8 of the top. From the foregoing it will be seen that there is provided a combined cooking top cover and splashback plate which is extremely cheap and simple of manufacture, highly eflicient in use and of a desirable and advantageous construction in that thehinges and supporting arm for and easily enamel the cover both on its under and upper faces and to finish the under and upper faces of the cover in different color combinations.

The passage of the cover supporting .arm through the elongated slot in the top burner frame is such as to eliminate the necessity of the provision of any guide means for this arm and this again greatly simplifies and cheapens the construction.

Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A range comprising a top burner portion, a cover therefor having at its side and front edges a marginal flange and at its rear edge an upwardly bulged portion to form a hinge housing, a hinge for pivotally supporting the cover at the rear edge of the burner top, and said hinge positioned at the under side of said cover and within the bulged portion thereof, for the purpose described.

2. A range comprising a top burner portion, a cover pivotally mounted at the rear edge thereof, said cover having a marginal flange at its front and side edges and a bulged portion extending transverse its rear edge, hinges for movably supporting said cover, said hinges being attached to the face of the burner top on its rear edge and to the under side of the cover at a point within the bulged portion thereof and adjacent the rear corners of the burner top and .cover, for the purpose described.

3. In combination with a range having a top burner portion, an improved cover for said burner portion comprising a pan-like member having at its side and front edges a marginal flange and at its rear edge a transversely extending upwardly bulged portion, said cover being hingedly connected to the top burner portion of the range, and the bulged portion of the cover comprising a combined rear cover guard and hinge housing.

4. A range comprising a top burner portion defined by an angular frame member, a cover for said burner portion comprising a plate movably mounted upon the rear edge of the frame, said cover plate having at its front and side edges a depending fiange and at its rear edge a transversely extending bulged portion forming in conjunction with the side flanges a housing in the un- 'der side of the plate, hinges positioned within said plate housing for movably supporting the cover and adapted to be completely concealed within the housing except from the rear thereof when the cover is lowered, a lock positioned beneath the top burner frame, a support pivotally connected to the cover and adapted to engage said lock when the cover is in an elevated position, said top burner frame provided with an opening adjacent said lock to act as a guide for said support, and said top burner frame concealing said lock and said support when the cover is lowered.

5. A range comprising a flat horizontally disposed top burner portion, a cover therefor having at its rear edge a transversely extending upwardly bulged portion to form a hinge housing, a hinge for pivotally supporting the cover at the rear edge of the burner top, and said hinge positioned at the underside of said cover and within the bulged portion thereof for the purpose descrlbed.-
