To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK P. ANDnUs, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Almont, in the county of Lapeer and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Calendar MatchSafe, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to calendar match safes and more particularly that class of match safes having perpetual calendars.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive match safe, having a perpetual calendar and provided with a receptacle for containing matches.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having a per petual calendar, a receptacle for matches, an abrasive surface for striking the matches thereupon, and adapted to serve as an advertising novelty by presenting surfaces upon which advertisements of various kinds can be inscribed.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more particularly described hereinafter, and fully set forth in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompan ing drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 22 of Fig. 1 Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.

Before proceeding to a more detailed eX- planation of my invention, it should be un derstood that the same may be fashioned from any suitable material, for instance, wood, card-board, metal and celluloid.

' The device may be used upon a writingdesk or may be hung upon a wall of a room, thereby serving both as'a convenient calendar and as a match safe. When used as an advertising device or novelty, the advertisement may be printed in any desired form upon the body of the calendar in a space or spaces reserved for that purpose. The body of the calendar which supports the match safe and presents the calendar indications, may be of any size and consequently, can be, used for advertisements of various kinds and sizes.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents the body or back of the device, consisting of a flat sheet or plate of suitable material, such as wood, cardboard and the like. The body, near the middle of the upper edge, has a substantially circular eX- tension 2 provided with an opening 3 having a metal or other suitable eyelet 4, to enable the device to be conveniently hung upon a nail, hook or other support. The extension 2 and its relative position with regard to the body, can of course be varied in the manufacture of the device, according to the form of body employed. The body 1, near the center has an opening 5 therethrough. The opening is substantially rectangular in form and is located on the vertical center line near the upper edge of the body. The vertical lateral edges of the opening 5 are formed into flaps 6, which are disposed outwardly and at an angle with the body. Arranged across the opening between the flaps 6 is a cylindrical frame 7 having open ends. At the forward side, the cylindrical frame has an elongated slot 8. The frame is secured in position by means of gluing, riveting or the ike, and is attached to the flaps 6 and the body 1 near the upper and lower edges of the opening 5. Near the lower edge, the frame 7 on the inside has an annular projection or collar 9 rigidly mounted in position.

A cylindrical container 10 is movably arranged within the cylindrical frame-and engages the projection 9. The container normally extends beyond the frame at the upper end so-that it can be conveniently grasped to turn it within the frame. has a transverse bottom 11 arranged between the ends, forming at the upper end of the container a chamber of suitable depth for holding matches 12 as shown most clearly in Fig. 1. The container is rotatable within the frame 7, and a part of the body of the container is always visible through the slot 8 formed in the cylindrical frame. Upon the outer surface of the container are indicated in vertical columns 13, the days of the week. Each column is of substantially the same size as the slot in the frame, so that the entire column can be seen through the slot. The columns are seven in number, having the days arranged in each, successively, each column beginning with a different day. Thus, one column will read Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and the succeeding column will read Saturday, Sun- The container 10 day, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. The remaining columns of the seven all similarly begin with a successive day of the seven constituting the week.

At each side of the match container the body of the device has indicated thereon, vertical columns 14 representing the days of the month in numbers, as is usually the case in calendars. At one side of the container are two columns and at the opposite side are three columns. The vertical columns con tain the successive dates of the month, the first containing the figures 1 to 7 inclusive; the second the figures 8 to 14 inclusive; the third, at the opposite side of the container, the numbers 15 to 21 inclusive; the fourth, the numbers 22 to 28 inclusive, and the fifth the numbers 29 to 31 inclusive. The vertical columns upon the calendar body are sub stantially parallel to the vertical columns upon the cylindrical container and in horizontal alinement therewith;

At the same side of the container as the two columns presenting the figures 2 to 14, the months of the year are arranged successively in a vertical column 15, beginning with January and ending with Decemher as is usually the case. At the upper and lower ends of the month column the body has slots 16 and 17 respectively, slightly longer than the width of the month column. A flexible band 18 is slidably ar ranged in the slots 16 and 17 and has its ends joined by means of a link or shackle 19. The link or shackle is of such width that the names of a single month of the column can be seen therethrough, the ends of the band 18 being secured at the opposite sides of the link; thus all but one month can be concealed by the flexible band, which can be shifted upon the body to bring any desired month into view.

Below the match container and calendar,

. the body 1 has secured thereon by means of gluing or the like, a sheet 20 of abrasive material such as sand-paper, to serve for striking the matches thereon. At each side of the abrasive, the body has spaces which can be used for the printing thereon of advertisements. It will be understood that the body may be made of any convenient form for use as an advertising novelty. The calendar is used as follows: By means of the flexible band 18 all the months of the year excepting the present month, are concealed and thus the calendar indicates the month of the year and no other. The match container is rotated in the frame until the proper column of days of the week appears, the first day of which corresponds to the first day of the month. This column serves for the entire month, successive days of the latter agreeing correctly with the successive days of the week as indicated in the column 011 the container. For the following month the container is again rotated Within the frame until the proper column of days of the week for that month shows through the slot in the frame. It is merely necessary to bring into view the week having the first day coinciding correctly with the first day of the month.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A device of the class described, comprising a back consisting of a sheet or board and provided on its face with a plurality of figures indicating the successive days of the month and arranged in columns, said columns being divided into two divisions and with names of the months of the year arranged successively thereon, said sheet being provided with slots above and below the names of the months, a band passing through said. slots and having its ends spaced apart and connected together thereby to permit the name of a month to show between said ends, said back being provided with an opening between said divisions, said opening having integral, outwardly bent flaps at opposite sides thereof, a substantially cylindrical frame mounted between said. flaps and secured thereto, said frame being provided with a vertical slot at the front thereof, and a cylindrical container within said frame, the periphery of said container being divided into a plurality of columns each containing the days of the week arranged successively, each of said columns commencing with a different day, said frame having a stop to limit the movement of said container.

2. A device of the class described, comprising a back consisting of a sheet of cardboard or similar material having upon its face the names of the months of the year arranged successively, said back being provided with slots above and below the names of the months, a band passing through said slot and having its ends spaced apart and connected together thereby to permit the name of a month to show between said ends, said back having an opening formed therein provided with integral, outwardly bent flaps at opposite sides, means on the face of said back for indicating the days of the month, and means mounted between said flap for indicating the days of the week corresponding to the respective days of the month in the proper order.
