To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN E. MiloLAcI-r- LAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a certain novel construction and arrangement of parts whereby a loose-leaf-binder is produced in which a plate or bar provided with one-half of a set of leaf-receivin posts is rigidly secured to the cover, and-the other half of said set of leaf-receiving posts is rigidly secured to a plate or bar which is pivotally connected at one end with the stationary plate or bar and is adapted to swing therefrom and open the posts for the purpose of removing the leaves, and to be returned to and locked in position on and parallel with the stationary plate or bar, thus closing the opposite posts in the set for the purpose of retaining the leaves in the binder.

The nature of the invention is fully described in detail below, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a portion "of a looseleaf binder spread or laid open and embodying my inventionthe leaf-receiving posts being closed. Fig. '2 is a view in detail of the central portion of the cover with the posts swung open. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4-4, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 55 Fig. 2.

When the device is closed, the swinging ary bar or member (1, the pin '0 is at the extreme right end of the slot 11., and the lips Z, m and n overlap the bar 9 by extending over and beyond the ends of the recesses q, r and t respectively. When the device is closed, the end of the lowest notch q abuts against the lip Z, allowing the advancin edge of the swinging bar to reach the fart er edge of the stationary bar, so that the bar 9 completely covers the bar (1. The lip m is longer and extends further toward the right edge of the bar (1 than the lip Z, and the highest lip 72. is longer still, whereby when the bar 9 is closing the lips n and m successively pass the advancing edge of said bar, (instead of the edge reaching both lips at the same time), and successively overlap the ends of the notches t and 1', thus reducing the possibility of the bar 9 becoming bent or buckling.

In a loose-leaf binder adapted to be applied to a cover having ordinary sides and a connecting back, a stationary bar or mem- -ber adapted to be rigidly secured to said nearest the pivotal connection of the bars being longer and extending nearer to the inner edge of the stationary bar than the lip which is at a greater distance from said pivotal connection, whereby said lips will successively overlap the swinging bar at the ends of the notches, for the purpose set forth.
