Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
JOSEPH EMANUEL scHwIPrEnvoE sr. JosEPH, MISSOURI.
IMPRovED MACHINE IOR MAKING GAS kERoivrsvo'IlA'I-II.E oms,
Specification forming part of Vlhettersi Patent No. 87,299, dared February 23, 1869.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH EMANUEL SOHWIPPEL, of St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan, and in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Generating Gas; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and general arrangement of a i Fig. 2 is a side view, of the machine, the front side being removed.
A represents a hollow cylinder, made of copper or other suitable material, through the center of which a shaft, B, passes. On this shaft, inside of the cylinder A, is placed a wheel, C, which is constructed on the principle ofthe long-known cagnardelle,or French blowing-wheel, and is nothing more than a combination of a screw and a wheel, as seen in the drawings. A- due or pipe, D, allows the air to pass into the interior of the screwwheel, which,by its rotation in the gasoline contained in the generator A, causes a steady current or draft of air to play in the interior of the machine and press toward the orifice of the burner or burners, which are or may be attached to the pipes connected with the generator. l I
So far, the screw-wheel C acts as a common bellows, blowing air into the generator A.
vTo combine its action as a blower with the qualification of an evaporator said screw-wheel is, on its outer surface, provided with a trimming, E, of common fringe of raw silk or other suitable material, said fringe being wound or attached closely around the wheel, so as to form a circular brush.
A sheet of copper or tin, F, (the protector,) is .fastened in a half-circle to the inside of the cylinder A, so as to form the half of a cylinder within the former, but leaving a small space between them. secured -to the upper inner side of the generator, and is, on its lower side, also provided with fringe, G, against which the combined brush screw-wheel G is gently rubbing Without im'- pedin g its motion. provided with small holes, a a, to let the gas pass,-but to avoid any contact of the frame with the fluid'.
From the top of the generator A, a. pipe, H, leads to the burner. The opening b in the top of the generator, which is closed by a screwstopper, c, and screw-capot, is for the purpose of admitting the gasoline or paraftne-oil, from which the gas is generated, into the cylinder A. The iiuid is admitted until it reaches the gage e on the rear side of the generator, when the opening b is securely closed.
When, now, the shaft-B is turned the abovedescribed brush screw-wheel C dips into the iuid, and with the fringe carries it up and moistens the fringe of the concave protector F, and, with theaidrof the constant current of air passing and blowing through said fringe trimming, the gasoline evaporates into gas, and is forced in that form toward the burner.
The end of the shaft B passes through the end of the cylinder A, and a crank may be applied to the same, so as to turn the wheel C.
The machine as represented in the drawings, and which I denominate Schwippels Universal Luminator, is applicable to lampposts, as a few revolutions only of the machine are sufcient to generate gas enough for the time that street-lamps generally are lighted.
To light houses, public halls, &c., where number of burners are used, the machine will of course be made on a larger scale, and then the wheel C may be turned by a weight, clockwork, or any other suitable means. The tube fat the bottom of the generator is for the` purpose of emptying the remaining fluid when so desired. Around one end of the shaft B is placed a stuffing-box, g, by means of which more air can be admitted to the generator, if deemed necessary.
Having thus fully described my invention,
This half-cylinder F is The protector F is further air-pipe D, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set orth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of JOSEPH E. SOHWIPPEL.
Letters Patent, is-

protector F and its trimming G, all substantiall y as and for the purposes herein set forth. Witnesses:
2. In combination with the above, the shaft LEOPOLD EVERT,
B, screw-wheel U, with its trimming E, and A. N. MARR.
