I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NATHAN S. WAKEFIELD, OF CAMDEN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO QUINCYBARBER, OF SAME PLACE.
MACHINE FOR CUTTING PEGS FROM BOCTS OR SHOES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 281,587, dated July 17, 1883.
Application filed May 22 1883. (N model.) F
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN S. WAKEFIELD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Camden, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Cutting Pegs from the Inside of Shoes and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked'thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation; Figs. 2 and 3,
vertical sections. Fig. 4 is a top view Fig. 5, a top View with cap and cutter-head removed; Figs. 6 and 7, details. My invention relates to certain improvements in machines for cutting pegs from the inside of shoes by means of a revolving cutting-head; and it consists in a certain novel construction and arrangement of the various parts, all of which I will now proceed more particularly to point out and describe.
Referring to the drawings, similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A is a hollow standard, made of any suitable material, preferably of cast metal, and secured at its base to a stand or table, B.
C is a metal frame, hinged to the standard A by pins a, which have their bearings in the straps or projections a, whichare secured to the outside of the standard, the top of said frame C being hollowed out to receive the gear-wheels and cutting-head, as hereinafter described.
D D are gear-Wheels, which mesh with each other and rest in the frame C, the gearwheel Dhaving the flange c.
E is the cutting-head, which is screwed o the flange c.
d is a screw which passes through the center of the cutting-head E and gear-wheel D, and screws througha hole, d, in the bottom of the frame C, and is held in place by the lock-nut (1?, the upper portion of said screw d being smooth, and around which the gearD and cuttinghead revolve.
F is a cap which covers the gear-wheel D and holds the same in place, said cap F being fastened to the frame 0 by screws f, and having the flange e, which is flush with the outer edge of the cutting-head.
G is a shaft working in bearings g g, and,
passing through the table B, is given a revolving motion by any suitable means. 0n the top of said shaft G is a double or gimbal joint, H, the upper part of said joint projecting through the hole h in the bottom of the frame C, and having the screw end I, which screws into the gear-wheel D, and the projecting end i, which passes through said gearwheel and has its bearings in the hole 73 in the cap F. K is an adjusting-rod pivoted to the frame C, and passes down through the standard A, out the opening 70, its lower cndbeing bent to form a spring which engages with the notches'k, by means of which rod the frame and cuttinghead can be adjusted at any desired angle, thus forming a combined heel and toe peg float or cutting machine.
The operation of my invention is as follows; The frame andv cutting-head being adjusted at the desired angle, a revolving motion is imparted to the shaft G by any suitable means. The gear-wheel Dis thus caused to revolve, and, meshing with the gear D, imparts to it and the cutting-head E a rotary motion.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters I Patent ard A, and having the gear-wheels D D, cutting-head E, screw d, and cap F, in combination with the shaft G, having the double or giinbal joint H, screw end I, and means for joint H and screw end I, substantially as operating said shaft, substantially as shown shown and described. 10 and described. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 3. In a peg-cutting machine, the frame 0, presence of two witnesses. hinged to the hollow standard A, having the NATHAN S. WAKEFIELD.
gear-wheels D D, cutting-head E, screw d, \Vitnesses: cap F, and adjusting-rod K, in combination FRED. S. GAMBLE, with the shaft G, having the double or gimbal \V. S. FRAZEE.
