FRANK L. WEST, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
MOUNTING FOR HOOKS AND EYES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907.
Application filed August 20, 1906. Serial No. 331.241.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK L. Wnsr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mountings for Hooks and Eyes; and do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to mountings for hook and eye members, and the invention consists in a mounting or anchor plate substantially as herein constructed and in the combination of parts all as hereinafter shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
My chief object is to provide a mounting firm backing is obtained for said member,
especially at a point beneath the hump on the locking stem of the hook member.
A further object is embodied in the triangular form of the mounting and its three prongs.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved mounting as sold to the trade. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a mounting and a hook and eye member attached thereto as in use. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the mounting and a hook and eye member partially engaged therewith to illustrate the manner of attachment and detachment. Fig. 4 is a central sectional view of a set of mountings with the prongs in full lines and a set of hook and eye members in their connected relations upon a garment. Fig. 5 is an enlarged plan view of my mounting and a hook and eye member connected therewith, and the free spring loop. of the said member is shown in dotted lines to represent its disengaging position in respect to the locking projection beneath.
The invention comprises a mounting or anchor plate 2 of triangular shape having a prong 3 bent downward at right angles to the body thereof at each angle or corner of the plate, one at the front and two at the rear, respectively. Thus, when the device is attached to a garment or any other article adapted to permit the prongs to pass through the body thereof and be clenched as shown in Fig. 3, plate 2- is laid with its greatest length in the line of the pull it has to bear, thereby distributing the pull or strain over as great a surface as possible and at three different points. Plate 2 is further provided with a pair of open hooks or right-angled projections 4 struck up from the plate at opposite side edges near the rear or heel of the said plate. Either hook and eye member 5 or 6 Fig. 4, is adapted to be detachably engaged with said projections 4 and rest flat upon plate 2- substantially the full length of said member.
Projections 4 are located far to the rear on the sides of the plate to more advantageously distribute the pull and strain over the material to which the plate is fastened. Anyone of the common forms of hook and eye members 5 and 6 respectively, may be used with my improved mounting. As shown, member 5 is of the form bent into hook shape from a single piece of spring wire with opposite looped ends 7 and 8- respectively, and has a shouldered or humped stem 9 extending centrally to the front beneath hook 10.' Member -6 is of the form having an eye or loop adapted to engage hook 10 of member 5.
When hook member 5 is secured in lace upon mounting 2 by engagin .oop end 7 over one projection 4- an by springing free loop end 8 over the other projection 4, said member rests substantially full length upon plate 2, and humped stem 9 is withheld from independent downward movement into the cloth as it also bears against plate 2. When engagement or disen agement of eye member 6 is effected, 00k 10 swings away from plate 2- with the fulcrum of its movement at projections 4.
Prongs 3 and projections 4 are struck up as integral parts of plate -2, and said projections are preferably angular and open as shown to facilitate attachment and detachment of the hook and eye members. Plate 2 is also provided with two openings 12 on the line of its longitudinal center, wherewith the mounting may be sewed to the garment in addition to clenching the same thereon by prongs -3. This is of advantage when very thin materials are used as a support for the mounting.
What I claim, is
1. A hook and eye member, provided with a hump near its middle, combined with a mounting having fastenings at its rear for saidmember and said mounting being of substantially the same length as said member and extending beneath said hump.
2. A hook and eye member having lateral loops, combined with a mounting having a substantially triangular body provided with a sin le front prong and two rear prongs integral therewith and lateral raised projections at the edge of said body engaged over the said lateral loops of said hook and eye member.
3. As a new article of manufacture and sale, a mounting for hooks and eyes comprising an elongated body having a single intes'mms gral downwardly projecting prong at its front end and opposite integral prongs at its rear edge and lateral raised projections at each opposite sides thereof and standing above the plane of said plate, and adapted to detachably mount hook and eye members upon the upper face of said mounting.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
