Description

PATEN'IED DEC. 3, 1907.
0. P. GIFFORD. LAMP EXTINGUISHING MECHANISM APPLICATION FILED PEB.9.190 7.

PATENT OFFICE.
CYRUS P. GIFFORD, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
LAMP-EXTINGUISHING ME GHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907.
Application filed February 9 1907. Serial No. 356.653.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OYRUs P. GIFFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Extinguishing Mechanism and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to oil-lamp burners, and has for its object the providing of mechanism on lamp burners whereby when the lamp and burner are overturned, the flame will be automatically extinguished. To accomplish this object I mount a U-shaped lever in bearings on the burner, and upon this lever I place a roller loosely j ournaled thereon so that when the lever is raised the roller will pass up over the top of the wick-tube'and the wick therein. I also make the vent-tube at the side of the wick-tube so that it will slide up and down freely, and in the burner I provide mechanism to automatically raise the lever and the vent-tube in unison, so as to extinguish the flame from the wick. These and other features of my invention are hereinafter set forth and explained, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a lamp burner embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same with the burner-cap removed.
Inthese drawings illustrating my invention, A is the frame of a lamp burner B the wick-tube; and G the burner-cap of usual construction. Upon one side of the wicktube B I mount a vertically movable venttube D the sides of which are provided with fiat extensions extending preferably out to the edges of the wick-tube B. On the top of the plate A of the burner frame A I provide bearings a a in which the arms e e of a U- shaped lever E are pivoted, and upon the lever E there is loosely mounted a roller F, the lever E being pivoted upon the plate A at such points that the roller F can be raised up over the top of the wick-tube B, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1; and on the back of the vent-tube D there is a cross-bar d which engages the arms e e of the lever E, so that when the vent-tube is moved upward it will raise the lever E in unison therewith, as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
At one side of the lower part of the frame A, I journal in bearings a a, a lever G which is provided with a retracting spring g. This lever G is so shaped that it extends around the wick-tube B to the side thereof adjacent to the vent-tube D mounted thereon, where it has a weight G secured thereto, and on the vent-tube D, opposite the weight G there is an outwardly projecting arm (1 which extends into an open slot g in the weight G, so that when the weight G moves up and down the vent-tube D moves in unison therewith, and raises the lever E.
In operation, so long as the lamp retains a vertical position, the several parts of the mechanism hereinbefore described remain in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, but if the lamp is tipped sidewise in any direction the weight G, assisted by the spring 9, immediately acts to shift the parts of the mechanism as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, which instantly extinguishes the flame of the lamp.
extinguishers for lamps have heretofore been used, but I am not aware of any extinguisher mechanism of the character hereinbefore described having been heretofore devised or made. Therefore I do not broadly claim an automatically operating lamp-extinguishing mechanism, but
Having shown and described my invention so as to enable others to construct and use the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. The combination in a lamp-burner, of a frame, a wick tube, a vertically movable vent-tube at one side ofthe wick-tube, a lever pivoted to the upper part of the burnerframe, a roller on the free end of said lever adapted to be raised thereby up over the upper end of the wick-tube, means connecting the lever and vent-tube so they will move up and down in unison, a spring actuated lever pivoted in the lower part of the burnerframe, a weight on the ree end of said lever, and means connecting said weight and lever with the lower end of the vertically movable I am aware of the fact that cap-shaped vent-tube, substantially as and for the ,purlever up and down in unison, substantially as pose set forth. and for the purpose set forth. 10 I 2. The combination in a lainpburner, of a In testimony whereof I afi ix my signature, Wick-tube, a vertically movable vent-tube at in presence of tWo Witnesses.
5 one side of the Wick-tube, a lever pivoted to CYRUS P. GIFFORD.
the upper part of the burner-frame, a roller Witnesses: loosely mounted on the free-end of said lever, NELLIE MURPHY,
and means for moving said vent-tube and GEO. E. GIBsoN.
