Letters Patent No. 87,271, dated Febfrua/ry 23, 1869.
INIPRKOVED PORTABLE GAS-GENERATOR Tiie-Bchedule reilen-ed to :in these Letters Patentandmakidg part 0f thelam- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. LovELEss, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, and .in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Generating Hydrocarbon-Gas; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference Figure 1 is a side elevation, and
Figure 2 is a sectional view of my invention.d
Figure 3 is a plan view of the stuffing-box B.
The nature of my invention consists in the improved means ofy supporting the cylinder which contains the zinc in the portable gas-generator patented to me.'
To enable others skilled iu the art tomake and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
A is the rod, by means ofwhich the cylinder O, con? taining the zinc, is lowered into the sulphuric acid S,-
wheu it is desirable to operate the machine,or the means by which the cylinder O is raised out of acid when it is desired to stop the operation of the machine. Thev rod A has a knob, a, by which it is more conveniently operated.
The stuffing-box B hasla thread cnt on its inside, 'at its lower end, to t the thread on tube H.
In the stung-box B, a recess, of ample and convenient siz'e, is made,`to receive stuffing or packing D,wl 1icb is composedl of rubber, leather, or other suitable malWhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,l is-y vThe combination of the packing-box B, packing D, and' rod A, with the adjustable cylinder C, when used in a gasgenerator, constructed substantially as described, ',andoperating as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the aboye-described new` and useful improvements in hydrocarbon-gas machines,
