Description

@W e 5mm hneln D. HfHILL, OF UNION SPRINGS, ALABAMA.
Letters Paten-t No. 85,822, dated January 12, 1869.
IIMPRO'VED :SAILING-PRESS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making lpari: of the im..
To all whom it may conce/rn Be it known that I, D. H. HILL, of Union Springs, in the county of Bullock, and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cotton- Baling Press; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication.
The drawing represents a side elevation of my improved cotton-baling press.
This invention relates' to an improvement in. the construction of a cotton-baling press, and consists in an arrangement of framing and screw-connections in connection with one screw, by which three bales of cotton can be pressed at the same time, as hereinafter described.
A suitable upright frame, formed of the double standards A A, set into bed-sills B B', and supported by'brnces C O, is erected, in which frame, on the bedsills, are placed three packing-chests or trunks, D D D, constructed with doors in the usual way.
The centre follower-block E is connected with the lower end of the screw F, and the two follower-blocks E'E, on the sides, are attached to runners G G, which are secured at their upper ends to a clamp or headblock, H, and pass freely through vertical 'slots or lnortises in the two screw-taps K K.
The head c of the screw F is tted to turn in the headblock H, and thus raise or lower' all the followers simnltaneously when operated by lever-sweeps I I, secured to the upper end of the screw by a cross-head or driver L.
It will be seen that with this arrangement of the screw, one bale of cotton, or two or three bales, can be pressed at the same time, as desired, by the application of mule or horse-power to the lever-sweeps I I.
I am aware that a series of followers in a balingpress has been operated by a single screw, butthis forms no part of my invention, and I do not, there--
