Description

@with ptetre @anni @ffice PHILIP EEES, 10P BRIDGEWATER, PENNSYLVANIA.
` Leners Patent No. 72,994, dated December 31,1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN DPvIcP Pon SOLDEIIING sanar-METAL eine.
dige Stimuli referat tu in time tet tt mimimit mating Inti nf tigt time 'l Be it known that I, PHILIP BEES, Aof. the'horough of Bridgewater, inv the county of Beaver, andv State of Pennsylvania, have inventod a. ncrv and useful Machine for the purpose of securing toigether'the different parts of Fruit-Cans, Sto., thereby facilitating the process of soldering; I do hereby declare that the following `is Va full, clear, and exact description of the constrnctionaud operation of the same, 4reference-being had to the drawings. v`
Figure 1 is a. longtudinalscction, showing the parts when adjusted.
Figure 2, 4also a longitudinal section, representingit with sides compressed.'
Figure'3,'a perspective view. l q
The machine (made to anyrequired size) iscomposed ot iron or other suitable material, and consists of a rod, B, Sliding within a tube or cylinder, C. To theoutside of vthis vcylinder are hinged radiating arms ff, Snc., to the other extremities ot which are also hinged vertical plates F F, Ste. Upon vthe outside of thecylinder,
andabovc the upper s el; .of arms, is the compresser D, attached tothe rod B, byAmea-ns of a pin, d; passing through the mortis'es c c, and moving withsaid rod. The compresse'r is usedl for closing together the arms ff.
At the top of the rod is the latchA, passing through a mortise, b, in it', and used' for-maintaining-the extension of the arms, after the machine has been placed vwithin the can. At the other extremity is adislc, E, for moving said arms in a direction counter to that oi the compresser.
l. The operation is as follows: Theparts of the can having been placed together, the rodB is forced down, folding the vertical plates F F. "The machine isthen introduced through the small opening at the top. The rod is then drawn up, iaising the arms by means ofthe disk E, and pressing'the plates 'F F outward against the `inside ofthe can. The latch A is then passed through the mortise b, andthe parts are held firmly until the joining of themv is completed, when it is readily withdrawn. l l
' I am aware of forming cylinder glass into an oblong shape, with two dat sides, by means of a, machine or device patented by William I. Walters, July 10, 1855, No. 13,245. ThisI do not claim. The holding of the several parts of the cuni together while soldering, I do not claim; nor do I claim separately any ofthe part of the above machine; but I do claim the combination and arrangement of thefollowingparts, to wit:
The rod B, the cylinder C, radiating arms ff, Src., hinged vertical platos F F, Btc., the compresser D, the
pin d, the mortises c c, the latch A, and mortse b, the disk E,or their equivalents, constructed, arranged, and' operated in the manner and for the purpose shown and described. i
' PHILIP BEES.
