SAFETY-LOCK FOR POCKET-BOOKS AND HAND-BAGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907'.
Application filed April 24. 1907. Serial N0.369,956.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN P. GEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Safety-Lock for Pocket-Books and Hand- Bags, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention when construed in view of the appended claims consists of a novel and useful construction of a handle adapted to be employed in connection with any desired type or form of bag, valise or other portable receptacle whereby when the same is carried there is no possibility of the bag being opened without the knowledge of the person carrying it.
To the above ends, my invention consists in its broad aspects of a novel construction of a separable handle, one portion of which is rigidly secured to one of the bow frames, the other portions thereof being each provided with a locking member which is adapted to co-act with means carried by the opposite bow frame in order that the bag will be positively locked.
It further consists of a novel construction of segmental handle, one portion of which is fixed to one of the bow frames and preferably consists of a sheet of pressed steel or equivalent material which is deflected or hollowed in order that the movable segments of the handle may be seated therein when the bag is closed and thus form a handle which will present a smooth and even surface to the person carrying it.
It further consists of a novel construction of handle comprising a plurality of parts and in which the movable parts which carry the locking latch or member are adapted to be seated within the fixed handle portion.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in section, of a bag having a handle embodying my invention connected therewith, certain parts being broken away for the sake of clearness of illustration. Fig. 2 represents a sectional elevation of a portion of Fig. 1 showing the manner in which the parts appear when the bag is locked, and the manner 1n which the portion which carries the locking member is seated in the fixed portion of the handle. Fig. 3 represents aperspective view of a portion of Fig. 1 having certain parts removed for the sake of clearness of illustration.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a bag of any suitable or conventional type, provided with bow frames 2 and 3 of any desired construction.
4 designate ears or plates integral with or secured to a block 18 suitably secured to the frame 3.
5 designates one portion of the handle, the ends of which are fixedly secured to the bow frame 3 in any suitable manner. The handle 5 is rounded or has its sides converging in order to form a hollow portion 6 in which the members 7 and 8 which carry the locking latches or members 9 and 10 are adapted to be seated when the bag is in closed position.
The handles 7 and 8 are pivoted at 11 to the ears or plates 4 and the members 7 and 8 are provided at their ends on their under side with a cam face 12 in order to permit the relative movement'of the members 7 and 8 with respect to the fixed member 5 of the handle. The latch or looking member 9 extends through an opening 13 in the block 18, the bow member 3 and the lower end of the member 9 is deflected as indicated at 14 in order to form a cam surface 15 which is adapted to engage the preferably U-shaped socket or keeper 16 which is carried by the bow member 2 on the opposite side thereof or by the strip 17 on said side by means of which the bag 1 is secured to the bow frames 2 and 3.
The operation of my invention can now be readily understood. Then the parts are in assembled position and the handles closed, the cam faces 15 of the deflected portions 14 of the locking member or latches 9 and 10 A bility of their becoming disengaged after they are moved towards each other into e11- gagement with the recess 6 in the fixed member 5. It will thus be seen that when the bag is being carried, the handle will be grasped in the usual manner and that it will be impossible for any one to unlock the bag without the knowledge of the person carrying the same.
Owing to the provision of the cam face 12 on the members 7 and 8, the relative movement of said members with respect to the fixed member 5 is provided for and the space which the locking mechanism occupies is reduced to a minimum and the device does not detract in any manner from the appearance of the bag.
WVhile in the present instance, I have shown the socket or keeper 16 as being preferably U-shaped, it will be apparent that the contour of this member may be slightly modified and still be within the scope of my invention.
It will now be apparent from the foregoing that I have devised a novel and useful construction of handle for bags or their equivalents which embodies the features of advantage enumerated in the statement of invention and the above description and which cannot be opened without the knowledge of the person carrying it and while I have, in the present instance, shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof which gives in practice reliable and satisfactory results, it is to be understood that it is susceptible of modification in various particulars within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is P"? 1. The combination with the bow frames of a bag, of a handle member rigidly secured to one bow frame, a pivoted handle member adapted to be seated in said first member, a latch carried by said pivoted member, and a socket carried by the other bow frame with which said latch coacts to prevent opening of the bag without relative movement of said handle members.
2. The combination with a bag, of a handle member fixed to one side thereof, a segmental handle pivoted in proximity thereto, locking members carried by said segmental handle, and sockets carried by the other side of the bag with which said locking members engage.
3. The combination with a bag, of a hollow handle member rigidly secured to one side thereof, a pivoted segmental handle provided with locking members and adapted to be seated in said fixed handle, and means second hande member towards said first handle member.
5. The combination with the bow frames of a bag, of a handle member fixed to one of the bow frames, a second handle member pivoted to said fixed member and adapted to move outwardly therefrom, a latch carried by said second member, there being an aperture in the bow frame contiguous thereto through which said latch extends, and a socket carried by the other of said how frames and with which said latch co-acts.
6. The combination with the bow frames of a bag, of apertured blocks having ears secured to one bow frame, a handle member rigidly secured to said blocks, a segmental handle member pivoted to said ears and engaging said first handle member when the bag is closed, a latch carried by each segment, and sockets carried by the other how frame with which said latches coact to prevent opening of the bag without relative movement of said handles.
7. The combination with the bow frames of a bag, of apertured blocks secured to one bow frame, a handle member rigidly secured to said blocks, a handle member pivoted to said blocks and forming with said first member a single grasping portion when the bag is closed, a latch carried by said pivoted member and extending throu h one of said apertures, and a socket carried by the other frame with which said latch coacts to pre vent opening of the bag without relative movement of said handles.
8. The combination with a bag, of a segmental handle pivoted to one side thereof, locking members carried thereby, and means carried by the other side of the bag adapted to coact with said members.
9. The combination with a bag, of a segmental handle pivoted to one side thereof, locking members carried thereby, and sockets carried by the other side of the bag adapted to coact with said members.
10. The combination with a bag, of a segmental handle pivoted to one side thereof, locking members carried thereby and having cam faces, and sockets carried by the other side of the bag adapted to coact with said cam faces.
11. The combination with a bag, of a segmental handle pivoted to one side thereof, locking members carried thereby and having deflected ends provided with cam faces on their upper sides, and sockets carried by the edly carried by one side of said bag and coother side of the bag adapted to co-act with acting with said segments when the bag is 10 said cam faces. locked. Y
12. The combination with a ba of a seg- 5 mental handle pivoted to one si e thereof,
lockin members carried thereby, sockets Witnesses: carried by the other side of the bag adapted W. F. JAoKsoN, to co-aot with said members, and means fiX- C. D. MCVAY.
