Description
,tatr @gattini WILLIAM CURRA N, or ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
Letters Patent No. 87,247, lated February] 23, 1869.
IMPROVEl DEPURATOR.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patentl and making part of the same.
To all rwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 'WILLIAM GURRAN, of the city and county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in ledical,
-construct the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which represents a perspective elevation of my improved apparatus, and which makes part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of au air-tight apparatus, for the reception of the ent-ire body of a person desiring a vapor or hot-air bath, with the exception of the face, said apparatusV being especially well adapted tc medical depuration, as hereinafter described.
A, in the drawing, represents a jar, constructed-of metal or wood, of sufcient size to hold a person in a sitting position.
1t is provided with a lid, B, which lits air-tight on the jar A, its edges, as well as those ofthe jar A, being provided with groove K K', the groove K being cov-- eredwith a strip of India rubber, or other suitable material, in such a manner that when the lid B, which is 'hinged to the jar A, is closed down on the jar, the India-rubber strip, or lining between the grooves K K', will be forced into the latter, thus rendering the joint air-tight.
The lid B is, at its top, provided with an opening, F,
^ which serves to allow the face of the person occupy* ing the apparatus -to be free of the latter.
This opening F is lined with a hollow roll, T, of India rubber, or other suitable material, whichpan be iniiated by means of a tube, o, applied to the lining T in any suitable manner, and which may be closed by an air-tight screw-cap, or in anyother well-known way.
C and E are stop-cocks' attached to the jar A, in any suitable manner, by preference, near the bottom, and communicating with its interior.v
The operation of my improved apparatus is as follows:
The person desiring` to takea hot-air or vapor hath, is placed. in a sitting position, in the jar A, in whicha suitable seat may be provided. The lid B being closed,
' so that the persons face protrudesth'rough the lining T, the latter is inated by means of the tube o, so as to make it close'air-tight around Athe face, .which will render the jar entirely air-tight.
Hot-air or vapor may now be forced into the jar, through the cock O, and the person submitted to its influence without being subjected to the necessity of inhaling the hot air or vapor.
For `medical depuration, after the patient has been subjected to the hot-air or vapor bath, for the purpose of relaxing the tissues, so as to prepare the patient for the atmospheric pressure, the vapor or air may be withdrawn from the jar, by attaching an air-pump to cock E. This Will open the capillaries, and relieve the system of eii'ete matter, and establish au equilibrium of the vital functions.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe combination of the air-tight jar A, its lid B, having a face-aperture, F, provided With an inflatable lining, T,with an airpump, for medical depuration, Substantially as described.
Witnesses: W. GURRAN.
