GEORGE HADF1ELD,OF CINCINNATI, OHIO. Letters Patent No. 70,087, dated October 22, 1867.-
i IMPROVEMENTS IN SURQIGAL GUES.
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, GEORGE HADFI'ELD, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Surgiczfl Cups; and I hereby declare the following to bc a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My improvement consists in the provision of a broad, mpervious, and highly fiexible lip, of prepared caoutchouc or gum-elastic, madeapplica'ble Vto the margin of a surgical cup, whether intended for dry capping" or to be used in connection with scaritication, vapor, or otherl medical ugent; -and the special benecial object Oi' my invention is complete atmospheric exclusion, without any deleterious pressure uipon and consequent constrictionof. the capillaries, which always accompanies the use of the common surgical cup.
, I have selected for illustration the application of my invention to a dry cup designed for use in connection with an air-pump, as pertaining to the class of cupping apparatusvfor which myinvention is most particularly intended. v
Figure lis a perspective view of a cup adapted for and provided with my improvement, the flexible lip being detached. n 'l Figure 2 is an axial section of the same, with the lip in position.
Figure 3 is an axial section, showing the application of my flexible lip tc a. concave cup.
Figure 4 shows one of my improved cups in use upona patient. i
The cup may be of the represented or of any approved form, and may be furnished with ja screw-neck or coupling, B, for the attachmentof the suction pipe of an'air-exhausting pump. A ange, C, which projects all around the mouth of the cup, enters a crease, D, in a broad and highly flexiblelip of caoutchouc, E. lhe flexible and greatly extended sole or bearingsurfacee of the li'p enables it to e'ectuztlly exclude the external air, without the painfpl and injurious local pressure caused by ltherim or margin of the common surgical cup. The lip is susceptible of ready removal Whenever it may be desired to cleanse, repair, or change the cups. The sole of the lip may have a concave, convex, or other form, so as tot any specific part or member of the human body. l
I claim herein as new, andlomy invention- The arrangement of Banged cup A C, and grooved, broad, and flexible lip D E, as set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand. I
GEORGE HADFIELD.
