Specification of Letters IBatent.
Patented Jan. 16, 1917.
Application filed March a, 1916. Serial a... 81,927.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED S. SAKANAI, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nipples; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to nipples for nursing bottles and the primary object of the invention is to provide a nipple which is 15 provided with an inwardly extending substantially conical portion, the inner or apex end of which is split to permit the inlet of air into .the bottle during the nursing or sucking of the nipple by an infant so as to permit the contents of the bottle to flow freely out' of the nipple, and for eliminating a vacuum within the bottle which necessitates relatively strenuous efforts on the part of an infant. v \Vith the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the. accompanying I. drawings wherein like characters designate reduced-portion 2 and is constructed of resilient rubber as is ordinary in the construction of nursing nipples. The body of the nipple 1 has an inwardly extending conical projection 3 formed thereon, the inner end or apex of which is split as shown at 4 so as to permit the passage of air into the bottle, when an infant is nursing or sucking upon the nipple, the sides of the split 4 diverge as they extend inwardly into the interior of the conical extension, for weakening the extension to allow free spreading movement of the sides of the split upon sudden action upon the mouth 2. The entrance of air into the. bottle, prevents the formation of a vacuum, within the bottle, and permits the contents of the bottle to flow relatively freely out of .the perforatedreduced end 2 of the nipple 1. The conical inwardly extending extension 3' is hollow as clearly shown at. 5 in Fig. 20f the drawings and the engagement of theedges of the split portion l'of the conical extension and the elasticity of the member prevents the milk or other contents of the bottle from passing out through the split 4.
In Fig. 4 of the drawing, a modified form of the invention is shown wherein the nipple which is generically indicated by the numeral 10 is provided with an opening 11 "upon the outer-end of the insert, which prevents the accidental dislodgment of the insert with respect to the nipple 10.
In reducing the invention to practice, certain minor features of construction, combination- 'and arrangement of. parts may necessitate alterations to which the 'patentee is entitled provided such alterations are- .comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
What is claimed is Q A nursing nipple including a, hollow body constructed of resilient material, a mouthpiece formed upon said body, a hollow conical' extension formed upon said body and extending into the same, the walls of said conical extension being equal in thickness to 75 formed therein through which a substan the thickness of the body, said conical extension having a split formed in its side, sides of said split diverging as they extend inwardly into the interior of the conical exten- 'sion for weakening the extension to allowfree spreading movement of the sides of the split upon sudden action upon the mouthpiece.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
