Description

W. B. WOHLOCK.
NURSING BOTTLE.
APPLICATION FILED AUGJ. I9I5.
1 1 99,025 v Patented Sept. 19, 1916.
UNrrED STATES WALTER BERNARD WORLOCK, OF ROME, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CLIFFORD E. KELLEY, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
NURSING-BOTTLE.
Application filed August 7, 1915.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, VALTER BERNARD VORLOC-K, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rome, in the county of Oneida and State 'of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nursing- Bottles: and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in nursing bottles and my object is to provide a bottle which will be flat on one s ide and extend at an angle to the object upon which it is resting.
A further object is to provide an im# proved nipple for the bottle.
A further object is to provide means for preventing collapsing of the mouth piece of the nipple. And a further object is to provide an air valve in the-nipple whereby air may enter the bottle without passing through the mouth piece of the nipple.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth and more particularly p ointed out in the accompanying specification. Y
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a longitudinal central sectional view through the bottle and nipple. Fig. 2 is a. bottom end view of the bottle. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the opposite end of the bottle with the nipple removed, and Fig. 4 is an elevation of the nipple removed from the bottle.
Referring to the drawings in which si1nilar reference numerals designate corre sponding parts throughout the several views, l indicates the bottle which is preferably seinicircular in cross section and provided with a flat side Z so that the bottle may be rested upon an object without rolling or turning over. In order to raise the bottom end 3 of the bottle slightly above the open end l to cause the contents of the bottle to flow toward the open endMa pair of ribs 5 are formed on the flat side of the bottle adjacent the edges thereof which eX- tend longitudinally ofk the bottle, said ribs gradually tapering from the bottom end of the bottle to the forward end thereof so that when the bottle is resting upon an Specication of Letters Patent.

' plane below the bottom end causing the bottle to rest at an angle.
Surrounding the open end ofthe bottle is a flange' or bead 6 which is preferably rounded and is adapted to receive the curved lip 7 of a nipple 8, said nipple being preferably constructed of rubber and having a curved lip of slightly less diameter than the diameter of the flange 6 so as to require stretching of the lip in order to introduce the same over the flange, thus forming a perfect seal between the lip and flange.
The nipple 8 is likewise provided with a fiat portion 9 which is flared outward from the trend of the flat face 2 of the bottle, and a curved body portion l0, the curved body portion and edges of the flat portion being tapered and terminating in a mouth piece 11 at its forward end, said mouth piece resting at a greater outward angle flare `from the iiat face 2 of the bottle than the at portion 9 whereby the mouth piece may be readily grasped by the child even when Athe bottle is lying with its flat side upon the breast of the child. Said mouth piece having an opening l2 through which ther contents of the bottle may flow.
In order to prevent collapsing of the mouth piece when in use, a plurality of in,- wardly directed studs 13 are formed at the neck of the mouth piece which, when the wall of the mouth piece is brought together by pressure thereon, will contact .with each other and prevent further collapsing kof the wall of the mouth piece, thus always maintaining aii opening through which the contents of the bottle may flow into the mouth piece. 0
The nipple is provided with a port 14;, which is preferably positioned adgacent the lip of the nipple" and at the normally highest portion thereof, through which air may pass into the bottle, thus giving 'a uniform, even flow to the contents of the bottle.
By extendingthe liatsection of the nipple at an outward flare from the trend of the flat face of the bottle and by `extending the mouth piece at a still greater angle, said mouth piece can be readily grasped by the infant at whatever position the bottle may be resting, and when the bottle is rested upon the breast of the child, the flat face' of the bottle and flat section of the nipple will be so tilted, in view of the angle of the ribs 5, that the contents of the bottle will readily flow into the nipple and mouth piece. It will likewise be seen that by providing the studs at the neck of the mouth piece, the walls of the nipple will be prevented from collapsing to such an'extent as to close the passage between the nipple and mouthv piece. And it will likewise be seen that by `providing the port or air vent in the body portion of the nipple the flow of the milk through the mouth piece will be uni'- form. I
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a nursin bottle, the combination with a bottle proper having ribs and a flange around its open end, of a nipple having a curved lip adapted to be stretched over and engaged with said flange, said nip ple having a at -face Haring outward from the corresponding wall of the bottle, a mouth piece integral with the nipple and extending at a greater outward angle from f the axis of the bottle than the angle of vthe flat face, means to prevent the collapsing of the mouth piece and a port to admit air into saidnipple structure.
2. The combination with a nursing bottle comprising a hollow member having a flange surrounding its open end, of a nipple having a curved lip yadapted Vto engage said flange, said nipple having a mouth piece integral with the nipple and rounded studs in the mouth piece-at its juncture with the nipple to prevent collapsing of the wall of the mouth piece.
3. In a nursing bottle, a nipple having a curved lip at its open end, .said nipple having a fiat face iared outwardly from the longitudinal. axial trend of the nipple, a mouth piece integral with the nipple and extending at a greater outward angle from the longitudinal axial trend of the nipple than the angle of the flat face, elongated round studs in the neck of the mouth piece to prevent the collapsing of the wall of the nipple, said nipple having a port therein.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
