DAVID PICK, OF SALZBURG, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
NURSING-=NIPPLE.
SEEGIFICATIDN forming part of Letters Patent No. 689,987, dated December 31, 1901.
Application filed June 17,1901. Serial No. 64,821. (No model.)
To all w/mm 'II'MI/Z/ concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID PICK, builder, engineer, and geometer, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Stelzhammerstrasse 3,Salzburg,Austria-Hungary, have invented an Improvement in Nursing- Nipples; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
"My invention relates to nursing-nipples.
The nipples as heretofore generally used in nursing-bottles present a number of objections. The suction-opening in these rubber nipples very soon widens out in use, thereby allowing the passage of excessively large quantities of milk from the bottle, and thus very frequently causing the infant to choke and cough. Moreover, the sucking action tends to produce a vacuum in the bottle, thereby causing the sides of the nipple to collapse and meet each other, thus impeding the further passage of the milk. This necessitates a temporary removal of the nipple from the bottle for again equalizing the pressure. Another objectionable feature is this: that in a great many cases the nipples if used for infants more advanced in age very soon become bitten in two, and thus rendered unfit for use.
The object of my present invention is to remove these and other objections and to provide an improved nursing-nipple which will be more durable and more efficient in use than those heretofore employed.
My invention therefore consists in the particular construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described and shown.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of animproved nursingnipple constructed according to my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are horizontal sections of the same on the lines A A and B B, respectively, Fig. 1.
In the nursing-nipple shown by way of example 1 is the main body of the nipple, preferably made of india-rubber and provided with the central opening or passage 2. The lower portion of the said main body is formed of an inner hollow extension 3, partly recessed and provided with a shoulder Within, and an outer extension 4, having the shape of a double cone. The open space between these two extensions constitutes an annular chamber 5, open at its lower end and adapted when fitted to the bottle 6 to receive the mouth of the latter, as shown in Fig. 1. The recessed inner portion of the extension 3 is fitted to receive a tubular body 8, of glass, ebonite, porcelain, or other suitable material, formed with a collar 7 at its lower edge. The upper end of this tubular body 8 when fitted in position engages the shoulder formed at the upper end of the recessed portion of the inner extension 3, whereas its collar 7 rests against the lower end surface of the said extension, as shown, the said tubular body being securely held in this position by the tension of the india-rubber, on the one hand, and by the engagement of its finger 9 with a corresponding slot provided in the extension 3, on the other hand.
In applying the nipple to a bottle I first turn the outer extension 4: upward and insert the inner extension 3, with its tubular body 8, into the mouth of the bottle in the manner of a stopper. I then turn down again the outer extension 4, drawing it over the mouth portion of the bottle. The said tubular body 8 has a central longitudinal opening or passage 10 extending therethrough for the milk or other liquid to be supplied from the bottle. This opening or passage is somewhat enlarged toward its lower end, but of a sufficiently small diameter to prevent any of the contents of the bottle from escaping when not in actual use. A lateral canal or passage 11 conmeets the extended portion of the opening or passage 10 with a hole 12, provided in the extension 3, whereas the outer extension 4 has an aperture 13 formed therein opposite the hole 12. In use the sucking action causes the liquid to flow through the central opening or passage 2, while the air admitted at 13 and entering the bottle by way of the hole 12 and canal or passage 11 efiects an equalization of the air-pressure, so as to allow the sucking operation to be continued without interruption.
By reason of the fact that the tubular body 8 may be Withdrawn from the nursing-nipple and the outer extension 4 turned upward the nipple is very easily cleaned and kept in order. Moreover, by varying the diameter of the central opening or passage lO-that is to say, by inserting bodies 8 of Varying inner diameter to thereby regulate the quantity of liquid supplied through the nnrsing-nipple during the operation of suckingmy improved nipple may in every case be adapted to the age of the infant. Owing to the greater resistibility of the material the liability of the nipple becoming destroyed by biting is greatly reduced, and even it partly bitten through the nipple will not thereby be rendered inoperative, since the passage for the supply of milk is not affected thereby.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A nursing-nipple consisting of amain body of india-rubber having a central canal and two concentric and spaced lower extensions adapted to receive between them the mouth portion of a nursing-bottle, the inner one closely fitting the bottle-mouth in combination with a tubular body arranged in and closely fitting the inner extension, substantially as described.
2. In a nursing-nipple, the combination,
with a main body having a longitudinal canal I or passage therethrough and two concentric hollow extensions forming an intermediate space open at its lower end, of a tubular body inserted in the inner extension and communicating with the longitudinal canal or pas sage of the said main body, the said tubular body and the extensions being provided with openings for admitting. air to the bottle, substantially as described.
3. In a nursing-nipple, the combination,
with the main body having two concentric DAVID PICK.
