HOWARD V. BRUlVILEY, OF NEW YORK7 N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO WHITALL, TATUM COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION 0F NEW JERSEY.
BREAST-PUMP.
Specieation of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1910.
Application filed February 23, 1909. Serial No. 479,570.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I-Iowniu) V. BRUMLEY, a citizen ot' the United States, and resident of the borough oit- Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breast-Pumps, ot' which the :t'ollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to breast pumps and has tor its object to construct a pmnp ol this description in such a manner that the interior will be free it'rom angles so as to be easily and thoroughly cleaned and which may be applied to the breast in any position and still retain lthe milk against entrance to the bulb. I i'urther attach the bulb to the neck ot' the receptacle in such a manner as to secure an air tight joint and consequent perfect suction.
My invention will be fully described hereinafter and the Jfeatures of' novelty will be pointed out in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a part elevation and part central sectional view ot my improved pump; Fig. 2 is a cross section thereotl on the line 2N2 of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view ot the bulb.
In the drawings A represents the flaring mouth otl the pump which is applied to the breast and which is connected and communi- Cates with the bulbous receptacle D. The said receptacle B formed with a screwthreaded tubular neck C adapted to receive the screw-threaded sleeve or collar D. The rubber bulb E is provided with a neck portion E formed with an annular flange E2 arranged to abut against the end of the neck C. The collar D is provided with an annular flange D loosely surromuling the neck portion E of the rubber bulb E and adapted to engage the flange D2 thereof. Thus as the collar D is screwed up on the neck (l, the flange E2 will be firmly clamped between the end of lthe neck C and the flange D ot the collar D. The connection between the rubber bulb and the neck C is thus absolutely air tight and a perfect suction is secured as the bulb E is operated. It will be noticed that the inner diameter of the neck portion E is less than the inner diameter of the neck C of the receptacle. A sort of protecting rim E3 is thus formed which prevents the contents of the bulbous receptacle from easily running into the bulb E. The bulbous receptacle B is circular or continuous in cross-section s0 that it is unnecessary to carefully position the pump on the breast, as no matter what the position of the pump some part of the said receptacle B will be in a depending position to receive the milk. The more the collar D is screwed up on the neck l, the better will be the connection between said neck and the rubber bulb. The parts o1 my improved pump may be easily separated for the purpose of cleaning and owing to the interior lorm of the pump and the absence ol angles this cleaning is easily accomplished and is thorough in its results. It should be noted that the flaring mouth A ot' my improved pump is of such size and shape that it will always be clear ol the breast nipple whether held in the hand or allowed to hang it'ree.
I claim as my invention: I
A breast pump comprising a one-piece receptacle and a collapsible suction bulb, said receptacle having a central spherical portion provided with an outwardly flared neck or tubulature adapted to surround without touching the nipple joined to one side thereoli, and a cylindrical neck joined to the other side thereo'l, both tubulature and neck having a diameter ot the sphere as their central axis and the neck having an external screw thread formed thereon; and the suction bulb beingl spherical in shape and provided with a neck having an external annular f'lal'lge at the outer extremity thereof, the outer diameter ol. said flange being substantially equal to that ot the neck ol? the receptacle and itsl internal diameter substantially less than the internal diameter ot the neck of the receptacle; said receptacle and said suction bulb being clamped together with the outer ends of their two necks abutting and so held by a tubular cap provided with a screw thread to fit the threaded neck of the receptacle and an inwardly projecting flange at one end to engage the flange of the suction bulb neck, as and for the purpose de scribed.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HOWARD V. BRUMLEY.
