Description

N.PETERS. PHOTO-LITHoGRAPNER, WASHINGTN D @met Gettin.
FRANCIS M. OSBORN, 0F PORT CHESTER, NEW YORK.
Letters Pat-eut No. 104,874, dated June 28, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN TONG-UE-HOLDER FOR DENTISTS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Toafll whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. Os'onx, of Port Chester, iu the county of Testchester and State of 4conc or bell-shaped cup, of India rubber or other substance, with a deep wedge-shaped slot in one side, which is mounted on a handle, and adapted for placing on the tongue, forcing it back, and holding it as required.
lt also consists in the application to the handle, of projections adapted to engage with the front teeth of vthe lower jaw, and hold the cup against the efforts of the tongue to thrust it out of the mouth; and
It also consist'sin the combination, with thescprojections, of an India-rubber or other cushion, to prevent them from hurting the teeth or gums.
The drawing represents a sectional elevation of my improved tongue-holder in use.
A is the cup, made of conical or bell-shape, with a deep wedge-shaped slot inthe under side, at B, to make room for the roots of the tongue. v
In making this slot, care is taken that it be not too wide at the base of the cup, for it is essential that the parts (l fit under the tongue sufficiently to prevent the 'cup from being forced upfsro that thc tongue will'es` cape through the slot.
This cup is provided, at the side opposite the slot, and near the small end, with a lug7 D, for the attachment of the handle E, which is so bent that, when in use` the end to be taken in the hand falls down near the breast ofthe patient, where it can he conveniently held by him. Y
, 'F represents the projections att-ached to the under side ot' the handle, for enga-ging with the front teeth, to insure the holding of the tongue back against the involuntary efforts to thrust it out.
G is a short flexible India-rubber tube stretched over the handle and these projections, to protect the teeth from injury, but any other suitable cushion may be used.
Having thus described my invention,
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An improved tongue-holder, having the deep wedge-shaped slot B on the under side, to admit the roots of the tongue, and the parts C, to fit under the said tongue, to prevent the cup from being forced up, all as set fort-h. f
2. The combination, with the tongue-holding cup or the handle, of the projections F, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with vthe projections, of an India-rubber or other cushion, substantially as specified. rPhe above specification of my invention signed by me this 29th day of March, 1870.
XVit-nesses: FRANCIS M. OSBORN.-
GEO. W. MABEE, ALEX. F. ROBERTS.
