PATENT @EETQE.
ROLLA M. CHASE, OF BETHEL, VERMONT.
DENTAL TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,162, dated September 13, 1904.
Application filed March 24:, 1904.
T0 ail whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RoLLA M. GHAsn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bethel, in
the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Tools; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in dental tools or instruments, and more particularly to a pair of compressing pincers or forceps for pressing or punching a sheet of metal foil into a cavity in a tooth or in a matrix in order to take an impression of said cavity.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, durable, and comparatively inexpensive device of this character by means of which an almost perfect impression of a cavity may be quickly and easily made in a piece of gold, platinum, or other metal foil.
l/Vith this and other objects in View the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, one of the jaws of the device being provided with a cushion cap or covering. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the elastic cone-shaped punch or die which is attached to one of the jaws of the device. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the cushion cap or covering used upon the other jaw of the device.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, l and 2 denote two levers pivotally connected intermediate their ends in any suitable manner, but preferably as shown at 3, so as to form a pair of pincers or forceps. The long ends or arms of said levers are curved to form handles 4, and the short ends or arms of the same are curved, as shown, to form jaws or beaks 5 and 6. The jaw 5 tapers slightly toward its end, which curves inwardly toward $erial No. 199,794. (No model.)
the jaw 6 and terminates in a flat circular face or end 7, which is roughened by milling or serrating it in order to prevent said jaw from slipping upon the surface of the matrix or other object with which it is adapted to be engaged. When the device is used upon a natural tooth in a persons mouth, it is necessary to protect said tooth against being scratched or otherwise injured, so I provide said jaw with a cushion-covering, preferably in the form of a tubular sleeve or cap 8, of rubber, which is slipped over the end of said jaw, as shown in Fig. 2. The jaw 6 has a slightly-enlarged outer end or head 9, formed with a transverse opening 10, adapted to receive the shank or stem 11 of a punch or die 12 to detachably hold the latter upon said jaw. Said punch is cone shapethat is, it is tapered to a pointand it is formed of soft or very elastic rubber or of any other suitable yielding or elastic material.
The device is used in obtaining a foil matrix or impression of a cavity in a natural tooth or in a metal matrix which has been made from a previous impression of the tooth-cavity, the object of making these foil-matrices being to produce metal inlays or fillings which are to be cemented in cavities in molar teeth or to produce porcelain inlays or fillings which may be cemented in natural teeth, and also for making porcelain inlay-fronts in gold crowns. When it is desired to make a foilmatrixtha t is, an impression in a piece of gold or platinum foil of a cavity in a metal matrixa piece or sheet of foil of sufiicient size is placed over said cavity and the matrix engaged by the jaws of the tool, the end 7 of the jaw 5 engaging that part of the matrix in rear of the cavity and the punch or die 12 engaging the foil and forcing it into the cavity, as will be readily understood. Owing to the shape and the material of which said punch is made, it will adapt itself to any size or shape cavity and will force the foil into all the interstices and depressions of the entire cavity, thereby producing a perfect impression or matrix. When the tool is used in the mouth to get a foil impression or matrix of a cavity in a natural tooth,'the protective cushion 8 is used upon the jaw 5 to prevent injury to the teeth or gums. It will be seen that by means of the device a perfect impression ofa cavity may be quickly and easily made.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the inven tion will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a pair of levers pivotallyconnected intermediate their ends and each having a jaw at one of its ends, and a cone-shaped punch or die of elastic material upon one of said jaws, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, the
combination of a pair of levers pivotally connected intermediate their ends and each having a jaw at one of its ends, a cone-shaped punch or die of elastic material upon one of said jaws, and a protective cushion upon the other of said jaws, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a pair of levers pivotally connected intermediate their ends and each having a handle at one of its ends and a curved jaw at its opposite end, a tapered, pointed punch or die of elastic material on the jaw of one of said levers, and a tubular cap or covering of yielding material on the jaw of the other of said levers, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROLLA M. CHASE.
