Description

UNITED` STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JOSEPH B. BENNETT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR T0 HIMSELF AND ERASTUS S. BENNETT, OF NEW YORK CITY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALL-VALVES FOUR INJECTING AIR Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 05,890, dated August 2, 1870 antedated July 19, 1870.
- the city ofBrooklyn, county of Kings, and State `of New York, have 'invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Valves and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and Vto the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure No. lrepresents a half-section of my valve; Fig. No. 2 the same, with the elastic ball attached and set into a section of a bag; Fig. No. 3, a perspective view of the same.
The' nature of my said invention consists, chiey, in the manner of arranging and combining the parts, but also in furnishing a lever and spring of peculiar make, whereby the valve may be operated from without. The valve is intended for use in portable rubber bath-tubs, rubber mattresses, pillows, cushions, life-preservers of various kinds, and, in fact, to all articles that require inating with atmosphere, especially such as have heretofore been inated by exhausting the lungs into them. It is arranged so that fresh air may be forced into the article, thereby avoiding the dampness of the breath, which soon rots the cloth on the inner side'of the article to be lled. It can be made very cheaply, will be found durable', and in some cases indispensable.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to explain its construction and operation.
A represents the valve, which should be made of rubber; B, the stem, which has a hole through its upper end, G, for the reception of an arm or end of lever D, which is pivoted at E, and packed by the rubber spring F. The arm or lever D extends outside of the valvecase G, so that the valve may be opened or closed by its means. At the top of the case G a suitable shoulder is made, over which the ball H is placed by means of its neck I. In the upper side of the ball H is the hole J. The ball is made of rubber or other elastic material.
A spring may be attached to the outer end ofthe lever D, if found necessary, to keep the valve to its'seat. f,
By covering the hole ,l with the ball of the thumb and compressin g' the ball, the air which it contains will force the valve' down or open, and pass into the bag or article to be inilated. The rubber spring brings it (the valve) back to its seat when the pressure from the thumb is removed. When the receptacle is full it may be emptied by raising the lever or arm D.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The arm D and rubber packin g-sprin g F, substantially as set forth.
2. The ball H, valve-case G, valve a, arm D, and packing F, all arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
