UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. TILL AND .IOHN O. NEWTON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
VERANDA-SWING.
Specification of Letters Patent,
Patented Oct. 29, 1907.
Application tiled April 30, 1907- Serial No. 371.131.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM F. TILL and JOHN C. NEWTON, citizens of the United States, and residents of Brooklyn, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Veranda-Swings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to portable and convertible swings; and it consists in a veranda swing of that description which is quickly convertible into an inants crib without detaching any rparts by simply changing the angle at which the seat or body is suspended, and is also adapted to be readily taken apart and com; pactly stowed away or packed in a trunk or the like, and to be put together without the aid of tools other than an ordinary screw-driver or its equivalent.
A sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof.
Figures l and 2 are side or end views of the improved veranda swing, showing the same in the orm of a swinging seat or swing and in the form of a crib, respectively; Figs. 3 and 4- are perspective views of the body oi the same, corresponding respectively with Figs. l and 2 and Fig. 5 is a sectional detail of one corner of the frame.
Like reference characters indicate like parts in all iigures.
The body of the swing is composed of a rectangular metallic frame, a, and a canvas body part, b, attached on all sides to said frame, and is so proportioned as to form a comfortable seat for two adults as shown in Figs. l and 3, or a safe crib for an infant as in Figs. 2 and 4. In either case the body a-b is suspended by one and the same pair of flexible Suspenders, c, preferably metallic chains, at the respective ends, from a pair of hooks, d, in the ceiling of the veranda.
The frame a consists of tubular side pieces, l and 2, Figs. 3 and 4, of suitable length, and shorter tubular end-pieces, 3 and 4, all of suitable iron pipe; four iron tee-pieces, 5, each of the construction represented in Fig. 5, screwedl fast to the extremities oi the endpieces 3 and 4, and adapted to slip on the side pieces l and 2, and provided with set screws, 6, by which to fasten them in place and iron or brass caps, '7, screwed fast upon the ends of the side pieces l and 2 of the frame, and which serve not only as corner pieces, to finish its corners, but form wrists, 8, between the same and the tee-pieces, 5, to which the Suspenders c are attached.
The canvas body part b has ends, 9, which determine its form and adapt it for its respective uses, being substantially triangular in shape with a rounded angle which is at Inidwidth in the crib arrangement. The upper edges of the canvas part are provided with horizontal pockets, l0, to embrace the several frame pieces, l, 2, 3 and 4. i
Knobs may obviously take the place ofthe caps 7, or bolts of the screws 6, or loops of the pockets l0; canvas may be replaced by any other suitable iiexible fabric; and other like modications will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
We claim as our invention:
A veranda swing or swinging seat suitable for two adults, adapted to be converted at will into an infant's crib by simply changing the angle at which the body is suspended; the same being composed of a metallic frame having tubular side and end pieces united With each other by tee-pieces screwed fast by their stems to the ends of said end pieces and having their cross or top pieces movable as sleeves upon said side pieces, set screws in said sleeves for fixing them in place on the Yside pieces, caps secured fast upon the extremities of said side pieces to form wrist portions between them and the sleeves of the tees. canvas bod;r portion removably attached to all of said frame pieces at its edges, the end portions thereof being triangular', whereby to hold the canvas bottom in shape as a bottom to the swinging seat and also as a bottom to the crib, and flexible Suspenders attached to the said wrist portions adapted to be adjusted in length and independently of one another in the conversion of the swinging seat into a crib, or in the conversion of the crib into a swinging sent, all subsequently as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM F. TILL. JOHN C. NEWTON.
Witnesses z W. H. J. GOLDEY, C. M. HIBBARD.
