To all whom it ma/y concern: i
Be it known that LWILLIAM-Bnsr, of Abingdon, 1n the county of Knox, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Splitting and ISkiving-Maehines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof which will enable otlies skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part f this specification, in Which- Figure 1 represents'a longitudinal sectional elevation of my apparatus, and

The object of this invention is to vprovide a simple and eieetive adjustable machine for splitting and skiving leather for harness-makers use.
It consists of a grooved block, provided with a splitting-knife inthe usual manner, in the groove of which, under the knife, I have provided an adjustable slide, which may beadjusted to split the leather in any thickness, or to split or skive it to any desired taper.
A represents a grooved block, provided with a splitting-knife, B, as in the usual manner.
C represents an adjustable sliding bed provided within the groove, and hingedto the slide D, provided with a handle. v l
E 'and F are wedges interposed between the bed C and the slide D, for the purpose of Aadj usting-the bed with reference to theknife.
G represents springs upon vthe top of the block, provided With a presser-bar, H, in front ofthe knife.
When a strip of leather is to be split, the bed C is adjusted to the proper distance from the knife, and the leather drawn through, under the knife, in the usual manner; and When a strip is to be skived or tapered,
u the bed is adjusted to the desired taper by the wedges,
and the strip placed thereon, when both the bed and the strip are drawn through under the knife,as will be readily understood.
