Patented Oct. 29, 1907.
Appiimiimi fiiefi July 7. 1906. serai No. 325.173.-
To all ielioni it 'may concern:
Vlie it known that l, liiiNJAiiiN Atnnii'rsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mantioloking, in the county of. Ocean and Slate of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful linproveinenls in Slat- OperatingMechanism. of which the following is a specific-ation.
rl`his invention apperlains lo window blinds, shutters or like guards for openings in buildings and likel structures and which blinds, shutters or the like are provided with pivoted slats connected to an operating rod or bar, whereby the inclin-.ition or relative position of the slats iiiay be changed to secure light and ventilation without necessitating llie opening of the shutter, blind or like part. llillicully has been experienced in securing the slats in llie adjusted position against air currents and jar. v
This invention has for ils object lo devise novel iiieans for securing the pivoled slats, either when closed, or when moved to the desired angular position, so as lo prevent displacement froiii usual causes, such as air currents and rat t'ling of the shutter.
'llie invention conteiiipl-.iles in combination with the Slat operating rod novel securing ineans for holding the rod in the desired position, said securing iiieans enibodying a cain lever, a keeper and a linger piece pivoted to the slat operating rod and passing loosely through the keeper and adapted to be confined therein at an adjusted position by nieans of the said cani lever.
For a full description of the thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the iiieans for effecting the result, reference to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings,
While the invention niay be adapted to different foi-ins and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing frein the spirit or essential features thereof` still the preferred enibodiinent is shown in the accompanying d rawings, in which:
Figure fl is a perspective view of a portion of a building, a window and a shutter showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 a detail view of a portion of a shutter showing the invention applied to the shit operating rod thereof, the parts being partly broken away and an adjusted position thereof being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a. front view of a portion of the slat operating rod, the keeper and adjunctive partis, the keeper and stud being in section.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the saine reference characters. i
invention and the inerits The slat operating rod l is connected to the pivoted slats 2 in the usual way. A finger piece 3 is connected to the rod 1 and is of such construction as to admit of the accustomed movements of the rod to effect desired adjustment of the slats both when closing and opening the saine to the required position. The finger piece 3 is preferably pivotally connected to the rod l, the joint being effected in any convenient and desirable way to obviate binding and prevent interference .with the free operation of the slats and rod l.. As shown, a stud L't issecured to the rod l and the linger piece 3 is pivoted upon an extension thereof. The linger piece is longitudinally curved and is arranged with the convex side facing the blind or shutter so as to allow for fi'ee nioveinent of the rod l and without interference of the finger piece with the cross piece of the shutter or blind.
A keeper 5 is attached to the shutter and receives the linger piece 3 and cani lever 6, the latter being l0- eated in an end portion of the keeper opposite to that receiving the linger piece. 'llie keeper 5 niay be of any forniation and attached to the shutter or blind by suitable fastening ineans which in the present instance consists of a screw 7 passed through an opening of the keeper and an opening of the cani lever, thereby perforiniiig the double function of a pivot fastening for the cani lever and fastening nieans for the keeper. 'llie keeper is located in such a position as to admit of the linger piece being of a inininnini length. 'llie longitudinal curvature of the linger piece provides for the curved nioveinent imparted thereto in the operation of the rod l without interference of the shutter or blind with the linger piece which would be the case if said finger piece were set. 'llie keeper is located to one side of the plane of movement of the rod l as indicated most clearly in Fig. 3 so as to be out of the way and not interfere with the movements of said rod when operating the slats either to close or open the saine. When the slats are closed they may be secured by fastening the finger piece through the instrumentality of the cam lever G. When it is required to open the slats more or less, either for purposes of ventilation or like, the linger piece 3 is released by moving the cani lever so as to loosen its grip upon the finger piece, and after the slats have been moved to the required adjusted position1 they are made fast by lturning the cam lever to cause it to clamp the linger piece. Freni the foregoing it will be understood that the invention provides simple and effective means for secnriiig the pivoted slats of a blind or like closure, either when closed or opened to any angular position, thereby preventing movement of the slats by air currents or jar and obviating rattle or noise incident to the slats when loose andobviatng the annoyance caused by frequent adjustment o the slats when opened and subject to the action of air currents which move the slats by impact thereon.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. In a shutter or like closure provided with movable slats, the combination of a slat operating rod, a fingerpiece loosely connected with the slat operating rod, :i keeper mounted upon the frame of the shutter and proA vided with a laterally elongated opening one end of which receives the before mentioned ngerpiece, a cam lever located within the opposite end of the laterally elongated opening through the keeper and engaging the iingenpiece to lock the same in an adjusted position, and a fastening member servingthe double function of forming a pivot for the cam level` and securing shutter.
2. In a slat operatingr mechanism, the combination of a stud secured to the slat operating rod, a longitudinally curved finger-piece mounted uponan extension of said rod and curved throughout its length with its convex side facing the shutter or like part, a keeper having an opening through which said finger-piece is freely movable, a cam lever located within the opening of said keeper und adapted to secure the nger-piece in an adjusted position, and a fastening member serving the double function of forming a pivot for the cam lever and securing the keeper to the frame of the shutter.
In testimony whereof I aiTix my two witnesses.
