CLAMPING DEVICE FOR CURTAIN-STRETCHERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 29, 1907.
Application filed September 18, 1905. $erial No. 278,924. Renewed March 23, 1907. Serial No. 864,066-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I'IELENA A. SCHWARZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamping Devices for Gurtain-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
"exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
l\ly invention relates to clamps for curtain stretchers, and is particularly intended as an improvement upon the clamping device shown and described in Letters Patent No. 798,076, issued to me August 29, 1905.
In the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application liigure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a corner section of the curtain stretcher, such as is shown and described in my Letters Patent aforesaid, equipped with my improved clamping device, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same.
Similar numbers of reference denote like parts in both figures of the drawing.
1 is a U-shaped stirrup having in its upper sides rectangular openings 2 opposite each other, the upper edges of these sides being surmounted by perforated ears l are the side bars of the stretcher frame which are supported loosely within the bottom of the stirrup,
and 5 are the cross bars which extend loosely through the rectangular openings 2.
The construction and arrangement of parts above described are the same as the construction and arrangement of the corresponding parts of the curtain stretcher set forth in my ,l ietters Patent above referred to, and my present improvement relates specifically to a device for clan'iping the side and cross bars when their proper adjustments have been effected.
In my construction set forth in said Letters Patent I employed angular resilient clamping levers, and while these levers performed their function in a manner fairly satisfactory, nevertheless the angular portions of the clamping levers eventually mutilated the upper surfaces of the cross bars so as to interfere with the ready adjustment of the same.
My present improvement comprises a bridge 6 which is secured to said ears and is immediately over the cross bar, and a horizontally disposed clamping plate 7 having upwardly extending ears 8 that are provided with vertically disposed elongated slots 9 through which slots pass the pins 10 which secure the bridge in position. II is a thumb screw which passes through the bridge and is adapted to bear against the upper surface of the clamping plate.
By reason of the fact that these pins 10 pass loosely through the slots 9, the clamping plate 7 is capable of a swinging movement and a slight vertical play so that it will not interfere with the adjustments of the cross bar prior to clamping.
The screw 1]. is operated against the clamping plate to force the latter down firmly against the cross bar and thereby bind the latter to the side bar, and when the thumb screw is relaxed new relative adjustments of the side and cross bars may be effected, the clamping plate yielding in order to permit of this.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
I. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stirrup having apertured sides, a side bar loosely mounted within the stirrup and a cross bar loosely mounted within the apertured sides, of a horizontally dis posed clamping plate pivoted between the sides of the stirrup and capable of a vertical play, a bridge secured between the sides of the stirrup immediately above said plate. and a thumb screw extending through said bridge.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stirrup having aperturcd sides, a side barloosely mounted within the stirrup and a cross bar loosely mounted within the apertured sides, of a bridge secured between the opposite upper portions of said stirrup and above said bars. a clamping plate having upwardly extending; ears provided with elongated vertically disposed slots. pins passing loosely through these slotsand secured to the ends of the bridge and to the upper portions aforesaid of the stirrup whereby said clamping plate is capable of a swinging movement and a vertical play, and a thumb screw passed through the bridge and capable of being operated against said clampingplate, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
