SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,978, dated Gotober 19, 1886. Application filed January 21, 1886. Serial No. 189.283. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I. JOsEPH F. GREGSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vellington, in the county of Sumner, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BosOnrBOards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to bosom-boards; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described, and definitely pointed out in the claim.

The object of my invention is to provide a b0som-board inclosed in a yielding frame having spring-actuated corners, the board proper of which is shaped to conform to the contour of the neck portion of a bosom, all of which is accomplished by means which are simple and effective in their construction,

readily understood and operated, and cheaply manufactured. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved bosom-board. Fig. 2 is a side elevation,with the board proper swung away from the frame. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a portion of two bars of the frame, showing the springjoint.

A indicates a frame composed of the cross bars a a and the side bars, a a. On the upper portion of the outside of the side bars, a a, are mounted and secured coiled springs a which have arms 0. extending into slots a cut in the upper cross-bar a, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2. In the lower portion of the said bars a, and secured in a similar positioJ, are coiled springs a whose arms a extend in the reverse direction and engage with slots (0 cut in the lower cross-bar a. The lower cross-bar a is formed with aprojection, a at its central portion, having a notch, a, cut in one side thereof. Coiled springs a are seated in each side of this projection a, having arms a extending into slots a cut in the side bars, a a. These slots are all covered by metallic plates a, which are secured over the said slots in whateverposition they may be. The upper cross-bar a is formed of two wide parts on each side,

which are connected by a rod, a, cut from the same piece of wood. At each place where the rod o joins the wide portions of the up per cross bar a, a shoulder, a, is formed which extends downward some distance. The rod (i is seated in a groove, 1), formed in an extension, b, of a board, B, proper, said rod o being kept in place by metallic straps b passing over said rod o and secured on each side of the same. The side bars, a a, pass through the slots a inthe upper crossbar a, the said slots o being of such extent as to allow a slight movement of the said side bars therein at this point, the said side bars being returned to their normal position against the board B by the action of the springs of connected thereto, and whose arms a" engage with the outside portions of the slots (4*. This movement of the side bars in the slots a is slight, being just enough as to allow the garment to be placed between the board B and the said side bars. The lower bar a is provided with a spring action as well as the side bars, and each of said bars is, provided with slots, the slots in bar a engaging the springs mounted on the side bars, a a, and the springs on the bar a engaging with the slotsin the side bars, a. The board B is of such contour as to fit the bosom of the shirt, being formed somewhat narrower at one end than the other, and at its Wide end is formed curved, as at If, to fit the neck portion of the bosom. The spring-actuated frame yields to the contour of the board B when pressed upon the same, being adapted to havea slight movementthrough the medium of the said yielding frame when theboard entire is in a position for use.

In placing a bosom on my improved board for the purpose of ironing it, the operation is as follows: The board B is pushed out of contact with the side bars, a a, and the lower crossbar a ofthe frame A, and theshirt-bosom adjusted upon the board, and it is then pressed back again between the parts of the frame. The said frame yields and clamps the bosom close down upon the board, at the same time drawing out all wrinkles and uneven portions therein. hen the bosom is to be removed, the board 13 is pushed from between theframe A and the garment can be then readily taken from the board.

The construction of this device is simple and effective and readily understood in its operation. By means of the elastic frame stretching or tearing of the bosom is prevented, the said frame acting as a clamp only so far as to securely but easily bind the bosom in place.

It is obvious that the board proper may be cushioned in any desired manner without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
