Specification of Letters Patent.
- Patented Apr. 13, 1915.
Application-filed July 26, 1913. Serial No; 781,447.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELVER H. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sedalia, in the county of Pettis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Door-Check, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to door door check and buffer.
checks, and relates to a novel and improved It is the object of the present invention to provide a door check and buffer of such pe- It is also within the spirit of the invention to provide a device of the character specified which shall be comparatively simple and in expensive, the same being capable of manu-. facture from strips or bars of sheet metal,
and being convenient and, efiicientinits use. With the foregoing and other ob ects 1n view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts andin the details of constructlon hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of the'device, as in use. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the device. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the door carried member.
In carrying out the present invention, ref erence being had in detail to the drawing, the device is constructed of three members, viz., a member 1 which is attachable to a base or mop board 13, a floor, or other supporting member, a buffer and catch member 2 carried by the member 1, and a member 3 adapted to be carried by the door or other swinging structure D. These members are each fashioned from a strip or bar of suitable metal, having the requisite resiliency and other qualities.
The supporting member 1 embodies a metallic strip or ribbon 4 having its intermediate portion doubled and projecting angularly to provide a horizontal ear 5, the strip 4. having its end portions disposed vertically and apertured, in order that the end portions of the strip 4: may be secured to a mop board B or other supporting structure, by
means of nails, screws or other securing members. The supporting member also preferably includes a horizontal strip or bar 6 having a slot at its central portion receiving the ear 5,-and having apertures at its ends for facilitating the attachment of the strip 6 to themop board. The ear 5 carries a clamping bolt 7' for the pivotalattachment of the buffer and catch, as will hereinafter appear. 7
The buffer and catch is fashioned from a strip or ribbon of metal, the intermediate portion ofwhich is formed into a circular loop 8. Those portions ofthe-strip or bar intermediate the loop 8 and the terminals areformed into a rectangular loop or frame 9 loosely surrounding the loop 8. The bends betweentheends of the loops Sand 9 are refleXed or bent back inwardly, to provide the beads 10 forming a mouth for the reception of the head of. the dog-carried member 3, as will hereinafter appear. The loop or frame 9 opposite the beads 10 is provided with the ears 11, comprising the meeting terminals of the strips from which the buffer and catch is fformed, the ears 11 being in alinement with the mouth formed by the beads 10 and being apertured and pivoted to the bolt 7 over the upper and lower faces of the ears 5. p
Coming to the door-carried member, the
same is fashioned from a strip or ribbon 12 having its intermediate portion doubled and bent into a cuneiform head 13 of a length slightly less than the diameter of the circular loop'8, the end portions of the strip 12 being adapted to be disposed vertically and being apertured for the insertion of the securing members to secure the strip 1.2 to the face or side of a door or other swinging structure.
In employing the present device, in connection with a hinged door, the supporting member 1 is secured to the base or mopboard in the path of the free portion of head 13 is adapted to enter the mouth of the' member2. The bolt 7 is then tightened, to I clamp the member 2 in position, and I the device is then in condition for operation. When the door :is swung open, the tip of the head 13 enters the mouth'of the member 2,
: and as the head13 isforced home, the beads 10 willseparate, under the tension. offthe .iloo'ps8 andi), andwillsnap in back of the v fshoulders ofthe head 13, to hold the door in open'position, is to be, observed that I when the. door is "swungopen against the forcibly enter thev mouth of the bufifer and member 2 the. forward ends of; the loops 8 and 9 willyield, so as to arrest orf check the movement of the doorin anveflicient'manner, the member 2 being of suchunique construction as to thus carry out this function. Par.- ticular. attention is directed to the fact that of' the doorcarriedmember is designed to catc h, whereby the. outer loop 9 will yield first to enabl'e'the inner loop 8 to contact I therewith and yield under greater pressure, V 30 andfinallv, upon still greater pressure, the
head 13iwillcontact with the inner loop and yield; Thus',-the door 'may be gradually brought to a standstill, bythe' successive "yieldingand bowingactions of theloops 9 andS and head'13;.- Whenthe door ismanually swung to closed position, the head13 Twill beretra-cted from the member 2, the
beads 10 yieldingltoipermit the head to withdraw from the member 2, as Will beap- -4 7 parent. 7 v
' From the foregoing, taken I connection with-the drawing, the advantages and capa bilities of the present invention will be 1 apto parent to those versed'in the art, attention being directedto thefact that the catch and buffer 12 ispivotally carried by the support ing member 1, in-order thatthedevice may l e-adjusted to suit the various conditions.
, so that the ear 5 when the door is" swung open, the head 1,73
Thus, the member 2 may beset so as to properly engage the door-carried member 3 irrespective of the-particular angle the door assumes when in open position. Attention is also directed to the fact that the supporting member 1 may be secured on the floor,
stands vertically, the member 2 beingswung, to a horizontal or other position, to properly receive the head 13 of the member 3 which is secured properly to the door. This method of employing the present device will be apparent without a lengthy description or illustration. thereof, and merely illustrates another capability of the improved device. i.
Having thus described is claimed as new is i In a door check, a;buffer and catch fashioned from a resilient metallic strip, the intermediate portion of which is bent to the invention, what tions of the strip intermediate the said loop and ends being bent to form a yield'able rectangular outer loop loosely surrounding the inner loop, and to form a mouth, the ends of the outer loop meeting and being bent to form ears, the ears being in alinementwith the said mouth, a.- supporting form a-lyieldable circular inner loop, the por- 'member to which the ears are secured, and
a .door'carried member fashioned from a metallic strip having its intermediate portion doubled and bent to form a yieldable 1 cuneiform head of a length slightly less than the diameterof the inner loop, and designedto forcibly enter the aforesaid mouth whereby the outer loop will yield first to enable the inner loop to contact therewith and yield under'greater pressure, and whereby the said head will then contact with the inner loop and yield under still: greater pressure. 7 p 7 In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
