Be it known that I, CHARLES H. Lynn, in the county oi' Essex and State of Massachusetts,have invented certain new and useful Improve# mary cover, which when open permits the insertion and removal of the garbage-holder, the primary cover having an opening inclosc'd by a secondary cover, which when open permits refuse matter to be deposited in the holder without opening the primary cover. An apparatus of this character is shown in Letters Patent of the United States No. 722,766, granted to me March 17,

The present invention consists in the improvements which l will now proceed to describe and claim.

In the drawings,12 represents the container-body, which is a cylinder. oi sheet metal, having'wire reins forcing- rings 13 and 14 at its ends, the sheet metal being rolled outwardly over the top ring 13, and preferably rolled inwardly over the bottom ring 14, the inwardly rolled portion constituting a seat for a spider 15 which supports the portable holder 16. v

17 represents the primary cover, which is composed of sheet metal and has a wire reinforcing-ring 18 at its `outer edge, the margin of the sheet-metal cover-body being rolled over the ring, which is of greater diameter than the mouth of .the container, so that the reinforced edge of the cover forms a downwardly projecting lip or flange, which surrounds the mouth of the container and v prevents the entrance ol rainand snow between 'the cover and the container. 'The cover has a central open.- ing for the reception, of garbage, said opening being surrounded by a chute 19, which guides the garbage into the holder 16. .ln Fig. 4, the chute 19 is shown as a separate sheetmetal tube, rolled outwardly at its upper end over a wire reinforcing-ring 23. `The cover is a sheet-metal annulus bent upwardly at its inner margin to form a flange 424, which enters the crevice formed by the out` wardly rolled end of the chute, and may be soldered or otherwise secured to the latter.

The primary cover is connected with the container by a hinge, preferably made of wire, and ormed as shown in Fig. 3, said hinge including arms 25 which are soldered or otherwise secured to the under side of the cover, and eyes 26 which embrace the containerreinforcing-ring 13, slots 27 being cut in the sheetmctal body of 'the container, for the reception of the eyes. A single piece of wire is employed in the construction o the hinge, the central portion of the piece constituting a crossbar 28 -connecting the eyes 26, while the ends 29 are or may be bent inwardly andsecured with the arms 25, to the cover. The secondary cover 21 is also made of a disk'of sheet in etal, which is rolled at its margin over a wire reinforcingring 30, said reinforced margin forming a downwardly projecting lip or flange, which is of greater 'diameter than the cover-seat or ridge 20, and surrounds the latter to prevent the entrance of rain and4 snow. The secondaryl cover is connected with'the primary cover by a hinge composed of a metal strip riveted to the primary cover and bent to form an eye 31, which is engaged either with the reinforcing-ring 22, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or' with the reinforcingring 23, as shown in Fig. 4, a suitable opening being ornred for the reception. of said eye, in the sheet metal which covers the reinforcingl 1t will be seen. that the above-described'construction enables sheetl metal to be advantageously cinployed as the material of the-container and its covers,`

and provides for suitable strength and durability, as well as for theA exclusion of water from the container.

In Fig. 5, I showl the primary cover provided with a downwardly projecting iange 33 adapted to enter the mouth ofthe container. y

In Figs. `6 and 7 I show the holder 16 provided with a handle composed ot a stout metal rod bent to form a hand grip 300, arms 310 at the ends of the grip, and eyes 320 at the ends of the arms. The eyes 320 surround a bead 24() at the upper end ot the holder 16, and a reinforcing ring within said holder, orifices 330 being formed in the sheet in'etal body of the holder belowA said bead to receive the lower portions of the eyes. A strong and durable handle is thus provided which is adapted toswing downwardly over the interior of the holder when not in use, so that it is out of the way and notliable to be injured by Contact with external objects.
