Description
PATENTED OCT. 1.5, 1907.
J. E. SOHNOPP. SWIMMING PADDLE. APPLICATION FILED MAR.22,1907.
WITNESSES W9 UNITED sTATEs JOHN ERNEST SOHNOPP, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SWIMMING-PADDLE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1907.
Application filed March 22, 1907. Serial No- 363,850-
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN ERNEST ScHNoPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Swimming-Paddles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to swimming paddles and has for its object the simple and economical construction of such a device which is easily carried and operated by the user as will be more fully explained in the following specification set forth in the claims and illustrated in the drawings where like reference characters are used to designate the same parts in the several figures.
Figure 1 is a face view of one of the paddles in its operative position. Fig. 2 is a rear view of same. Fig. 3 is an edge view.
The device consists of a flat paddle of wood or similar 1 material with an edge 5 surrounding it which may be sharp or reduced from the original thickness of the paddle in order to produce a cutting effect when moved through the water. The paddle 6 is substantially oval in shape although any other shape such as round or square may be adopted if found desirable and instead of a flat surface it may be also dished to produce better results when forced against the water. I
The paddle is provided with a handle 7 having at its lower end a perforation 8 to contain a band 9 to be worn about the wrist of the wearer and in the lower part of the disk near the handle is an aperture 10 through which is to be inserted the finger of the user of the device while his hand grasps the handle as shown in Fig. 1.
This constructiortprovides a simple and useful device which may be used by swimmers to aid them. It may be made at a small cost and made of wood, rubber or metal and sold for a small sum and if necessary the band 9 may be strapped to the wrist of the user in order to more firmly secure it but in ordinary practice a rubber band or cord may suflice.
Various other modifications may suggest themselves in the manufacture and use of the device without departing from the essential features above described.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A swimming paddle comprising a blade provided with a reduced integral handle, said blade and handle being provided with openings, and a looped flexible element adapted to be secured to the handle through the medium of an opening therein.
2. A swimming paddle comprising a flat blade provided with a reduced handle arranged in the plane thereof, said blade being provided with an opening located at a point adjacent its rear end, anda looped flexible element adapted to be secured to the handle through the medium of an opening therein.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN ERNEST SCHNOPP.
Witnesses Janus F. DUI'IAMEL, H. G. Hosn.
