Description

E.. L. POST. LEATHER 0R HIDE SUSPBNDING HOOK.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 30. 1906- I ll TTORNEYS PATENTED OCT. 15, 1907.
UNITED sTA rEs PATENT OFFICE.-
EZRA L. POST, OF WALLINGFORD, CONNECTICUT.
LEATHER OR HIDE Application filed June so,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA L. Pos'r, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Wallingford, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leather or Hide Suspending Hooks, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to suspending hooks, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device or devices of this class by means of which a stretched hide or a'part thereof may be conveniently suspended while drying without cutting holes in the hide or leather.
It is customary in the manufacture of power belts to first soak and stretch the hide from which such belts are made and then suspend the same in order to dry the hide or leather, andin this operation it is customary to cut holes in the hide or leather through which are passed the hooks by which the said hide or leather is suspended, but with my improvementthis cutting of holes in the hide or leather is avoided and an impor-' tant saving is accomplished.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in'which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in cach of the views, and in which;
Figure l is a front view of one of my improved hooks for the purpose specified embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 a view at right angles to Fig. 1; and, Fig. 3 a
view of a hide with my suspending hooks attached thereto.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a strong spring rod which is bent centrally to form a ring a one side of which is open as shown at a and at this open side of said ring the separate parts thereof are separated and overlapped as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The end portions of the rod are then formed into shanks a which cross each other at an angle as shown at a, but
are preferably separated one from the other as shown at a The extreme end portions of the rod are then bent at right angles and parallel to each other as shown at a to form a gage or guard which limits the extent Specification of Letters Patent.

to which the hide or leather can be slipped into .the hook members, and the extreme end portions of said rod are then bent to form oppositely disposed hooks a which range in opposite directions and meet as shown at a and this forms an elliptical space a which is inclosed by the hooks a.
or leather the end portions of the shanks a between the ring a. are pressed together, and this operation separates the hooks a and the end or edge of the leather is passed between said hooks after which the pressure on the shanks a is removed and the hooks a close up and shown in Fig. 3. By means of this device the hide or sheet of leather may be suspended from any overhead support.
In Fig. 3 I have shown an untrimmed hide the edges of which are irregular, but it will be understood that the uneven or irregular portions of-the hide may be out (if and the hooks connected with the body portion thereof, but in any event the transversely arranged parts a of the shanks a of the hook limit the extent to which the hide can be inserted into the hook..
It will be understood that the strength of the hook and the weight capable of being suspended thereby will depend on the size of the rod from which the hook is made and the spring quality thereof, and in practice the hide may be cut up into longitudinal strips if de sired and each strip may be separately suspended.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A leather suspending hook comprising an open spring ring the end members of which at the open side are separated laterally and overlapped, the said end members of the hook at the open side being provided with projecting shanks which cross each other and are bent at the ends to form parallel parts which extend in opposite directions and overlap each other, said ends being also reversely curved to form oppositely disposed hooks which meet at a predetermined distance from said parallel parts.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 28th day of June, 1906.
