Description

MnRL H.v HARTMAN, .or strinse', 'WEST VIRGINIA.
` WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
patented oet. 1,1907.
ippseaiensiea sp'l 1,1901'. serial 1re. seared- To all whomtt .may concern:
Be it known that I,
MRL H. HARTMAN, a citizen oi' the United States, residing at Elkins, in the county 0i Randolph and St at e4 of certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of
whichthe following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the 'accompanying drawing;
andcomparatively inexpensive Construction and' which My invention relates to Wrenches o thattype in which the movable jaw may*` be quickly adjusted. l
' T-he object of theinvention is to 'provide a device ofthis character which will be of simple, strong,v durable;-
' may. be quickly and easily' adjusted.
Further objects'and advantages oi the invention", asA well as the structural features by means of which these objects are attained, .will ybe made elear by anexamination of the following speciicatin, takenjin connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,
.Figure `1 is a side elevation of my improved monkey wrench; Fig. 2 is anedge view of the same; Fig.V 3 is a' longitudinal section through the, wrench, showing in full lines its movable yjaw'inv its locked position and in .dotted lines said jaw in its released position; Fig. 4'lis an elevation of the Vinner edge oi themovable jaw; Figs'.
7 is aview similar to Fig.'6, but'showing the position oi the parts when the movable jaw of' the vwrenchis released or unlocked.
Referringvto the drawings by numeral 1 denotes the shank or bodyp'ortion of the wrench, the upper part oi I stem or shank 5 provided with a flat,rinner tace to slid' 4'which is rectangular in cross section and has upon it` the stationary' jaw 2 oi the wrench. The coacting movable jaw 3 is adapted to slide longitudinally on the rectangular portion of the shank 1 adapted to' have a slight swinging movement thereon;
'rise ewinging 'Y opening 4 in the jaw- 3 through which the shankl pro- 40v movement is permitted vby Haring the jects and slides.
Depending from the bottom of the jaw 3 is an integral ably .engage the-tlat inner tace 6 oi the shank 1. The
shank 5 is formed initsinner face with a longitudinally extending groove 7 and witha series oftransversely extending ratchet teeth 8. The latter lare adapted to beengaged, by one or more ratchet lteeth 9 formed upon the flat inner ace' Got the shank Thevlower end ofthe shank 1 is reduced and of substantially semicircularshape in cross section, as shown at l() in Fig. 6, and beneath said portionlO is a.later' 4allyoffset cylindrical portion 10'. adapted to serve as a bearing for the handle as hereinafter explained.; and
the extreme lower end of said shank is ormed witha reduced threaded portion 11'.
' The shank is similar in shape to that oithe portion West Virginia, have invented formed and is also `l() of the shank sothat` the lower ends of both ofthe i.
vshanks may be telescoped by a handle 12 formed with a cylindricalfborel3.f i The diameter of the upper portionoi the bore 13,"as 60 shown itx-Figi 6, is equal -to the combined thickness oi the lower ends' of the shanks land 5," so thatsaid heure 'wiube heid inreemeetwith eeeh ethereed with improvements v in monkeyl the ratchet teeth 8, 9', in engagement and the movable jaw will be thus locked upon the 'shankofrthe station- 65 "I ary jaw.. The lower portion'o'f the bore 1 3 'is reduced to receive the cylindrical'bearing portion 10i.' of the i shankl and to thereby give the handle a rm bearing so that it cannot tilt laterally or transversely.
To enable ,the ratchet'teeth 8 on the s liank o the 70 movable jaw to be disengaged from the teeth 9 onthe I shank 1, a cavity or recess 14 is formed in oneside of the-bore 13, so thatwhen the handle is turned upon the shanks to its position shown in Fig.v 7,.the lower;r .end-'o .theshank 5 will swing outwardly into said 7 5 14, thereby 'disengaging the Iratchet teeth so as to ,enable the jaw 3 to be moved 'longitudinallyon the shank `1 The shank'5 is moved-outwardly by a'leaf spring .15,7
lwhichl has one of its ends secured at 1d in'the' lower portion of the shank 1 and its other end projecting into 80 the longitudinal groove 7 in the shank 5. A'stationary collar or-sleeve 17 is'prov'ided upon .the
shanks 1 and 5 'between'theupper end oT the handle* and a shoulder 18 formed by reducing the` lowerl end of the shank 1. This collar l17 tits the reduced rec tangular portion oi' said shank and its openingf, 19
I through which both of theshanks project is of suicient width to allow for the swinging movement oi the shank 5. The sleeve1-7 and handle 12 are retained upon the' shanks by a nut 20 engagedwitll the threaded end '90 of the shank l, as clearly shown in Figi.- 3. In order` to readily indicate thetwo positions to which the handle must be turned tolock and releasethe movable jaw 3, l preferably forni o n the stationary sleeve 17 marl or scores 21, 22, and upon the handle' 12, an arrow or 95 I score 23 which is moved intol alinement with'lthe q points 21-, 22.. The' construction, operation and advantages oi" the invention will be readily understood upon-reference to -the drawings. lt will'be seen that when the mov- 100 ablejaw 3 is locked the arrow- 23 alines with the point 22 and the shanks l and 5 are'held in contact with each `other owingl to their engagement with the walls oi the opening or -bore 13in the handle 12. When the shanks are in this position. the ratchet teeth 8 and 9 meshA 105 with each other and effectifely hold the jaw 3 against Y longitudinal movement. When it is desi-red to release` the jaw 3 so that it may be'adiusted longitudinally on 4the shank l, the handle 12 is given quarter turn and its'arrow 23 causedto aline with the point 21. This positiono the parts is indicated in dotted lines inFig. I
3 and in'full lines in 7. Whexi, the handle 12 is' may ',be quickly adjusted longitudinally to fit a nut,
bolt or the like of any siz'e inserted between it and its enacting stationary jaw 2.
It Will be observed that the device isof simple, strong and durable construction so that it Amay be manufactured at a eolnparat-ively small costl and its parts' will not readily become disarranged or broken. I Having thus described lmy invent-ion'wh'at I claim as new-and desire tosecure by Letters Patent of the .United -Sltatessqi A wrench comprising a stationary Jaw having a shank fformedat one endl with a cylindricalhearingr portion and at points intermediate its ends with a stop shoulder and a `stationary pawl, a movable jwlhaving a shank andra loop lto surround the shank of thestationary jaw, one 'wall oi said loop being inclinedwtopermit thexshank of the movable jaw to rock upon the shank of the stationary one `said shank ofpthe movable jaw being provided with a longitudnal'series of ratchet teeth to engngesaid stationary pawl and witlra longitudinali;Y extending' groove, a leaf spring. carried by the shank of the' stationary jaw and adapted to enter said groove, a stationary collar surround` lng the Shanks of both jaws and engaged with the shoulY der upon the shank of the stationary one, said collar being adapted to guide the shank of the movable jaw ln its sliding and rocking; movement, a handle to telescope and rotate upon both of said Shanks and formed with a bore hating an enlarged upper portion and a reduced lower por tion'to engage said cylindrical 'bearing on the shank o1' the stationary jaw, the enlarged upper portion of the bore of the handle being formed with a cavity or reeess to receive the shank of the movable jaw, and means upon the shank oi the stationary jaw for retaining said collar and handle upon said shanks, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afllx my signature ln presence of two witnesses.
