Description
- No. 867,336. I PATENTED 001 1, 1907.
' N. L. BARMORE.
SWELLED BAR FOR GASKET HANDLES.
APPLICATION FILED APB. 13, 1907.
NATHANIEL L.,BARMORE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SWELLED BAR FOR CASKET-HANDLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1, 1907.
Application filed April 13,1907. Serial No. 367,934.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL L. BARMORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swelled Bars for Casket-Handles, of which the following is a description.
My invention belongs to that general class of devices in which a suitable bar-handle is secured to a casket or box. In devices of this kind, it is desirable that the handle should be ornamental as well as of sullicient strength to serve the purposes for which it is intended.
The object of my invention is to produce an ornamental bar for handles of this kind in a cheap and economical manner.
To this end my invention consists in the novel con struction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts, Figure l is a plan view of a sheet of suitable material adapted to be wrapped about a suitable tube to form this swelled portion of the handle-bar; Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 illustrates the manner in which the said part is wrapped about a tube to secure the desired effect; Fig. 4 is a bottom plan viewer" the bar; Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 shows the finished side of the bar completed and ready for use.
In devices of this kind, particularly those designed for use upon caskets which are seldom used more than once, it is desirable to secure an attractive and apparently expensive article at a minimum of cost.
In the drawings, 1 represents a suitable tube or bar adapted for use as a bar of a casketor other handle. 2
is a suitable blank substantially triangular in shape, and preferably with its side margins 33 fluted as shown.
In assembling the two parts, the base 4 is centrally positioned upon the tube 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, and the blank 2 is regularly wrapped about the tube with the small end 5 centrally positioned and secured in place. This results in a swelled grip for the bar consisting of a plurality of lifts, one above the other, with parallel ribs or flutings 3 011 each side of the center. In the preferred use the bar is so turned that the ends 4 and 5 are concealed, giving the appearance shown in Fig. 6. The whole construction is exceedingly simple and economical and at the same time is strong and durable. It is obvious that the central wrapping referred to may be employed with either a tube 1, or an equivalent bar, the tube being preferred. Hence, where in the claims I refer to a bar, I wish to be understood as meaning a bar or an equivalent.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A swelled grip bar comprising a bar 1, in combination with a substantially triangular strap arranged with its base longitudinal to the bar and regularly wrapped thereabout, and with its small end centrally secured upon the wrapping.
2. A swelled grip bar comprising a suitable bar, in combination with a substantially triangular strap with fluted edges 3, arranged with its base extending longitudinally of the bar and regularly wrapped thereabout and secured in such position, the fluting forming parallel ribs on each side of the center.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
NATHANIEL L. BARMORE.
Witnesses JOHN W. I-IILL, CHARLES I. COBB.
