PATENT OEEIcE.
GEORGE H. HUSE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CANOPY-TOP FOR CHIMNEYS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. -*760,992, dated May 24, 1904.
Application filed October-.19, 1903. Serial No. 177,585. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. Husn, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Canopy-Tops for Chimneys, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to construct an improved canopy-topfor chimneys which can be collapsed or folded in such a manner as to occupy but little space for the purpose of shipping, and which will presenta sightly appearance when in use, and which may be cheaply manufactured.
Figure 1 shows in side elevation a canopytop for chimneys embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device, showing the top plate in section. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the frame, the top plate being removed. Fig. 4: is a side view of the frame with the parts thereof folded in position for shipping. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the top plate. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional detail of a portion of the frame and top plate, showing the connections for the parts; and Fig. 7 is a detail to be referred to.
0 represents the top plate, which is made cir cular and slightly conical. This plate is made of two or more pieces of mica, the adjoining edges of which are overlapped and secured together by rivets a, and said pieces are also secured together at the center by a gromet. a
The frame of the canopy-top consists of a plurality of legs I), pivotally connected together. The legs are composed of wire of small gage, so as to present asightly appearance, and said legs are bent at their upper ends to form eyes 6, and they are also bent angularly to provide a plate-receiving portion and uprights therefor. Three legs are herein shown, and the eyes 6 of the several legs are superimposed upon a gromet 6 The eyes are made large enough to turn freely on the gromet, which latter serves as a pivot. At
the lower end ofeach leg a sheet-metal chimney-engaging clip 0 is secured, which is adapted to engage the top of the chimney f. These clips are made of a width to provide for a firm engagement With the chimney and to afiord a good and sufiicient bearing thereon, and they are herein shown as secured to the ends of the legs by striking up oblong portions 0' in such a manner as to provide a hole at each end of the portion so struck up and then driving the end of the wire leg through said holes beneath the struck-up portion, as represented in Fig. 7 The chimney-engaging clips are thereby firmly secured to the ends of the wire legs. The top plate is detachably secured to the frame by a detachable fastening d, which passes through the gromet a and also through the gromet b For shipping the device the top plate is removed and the several legs comprising the frame are turned on the pivot and brought into position to occupy substantially the same plane as represented in Fig. 4:, and when so folded or collapsed they willoccupy but little space, so as to be packed snugly in a boX. The detached top plates will nest together in the box, and therefore will occupy but little space.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A canopy-top for chimneys consisting of a collapsible frame having a central gromet, a detachable top plate consisting of several pieces of mica secured together by rivets and by a central gromet, and a detachable fastening for attaching said top plate to the frame, substantially as described.
2. A canopy-top for chimneys consisting of a collapsible frame comprising a plurality of wire legs having eyes at their upper ends, and having sheet-metal chimney-engaging clips at their lower ends, a centrally-disposed gromet on which the eyes of the several legs are superimposed, and on which they freely turn, and a detachable top plate secured to said frame, substantially as described.
3. A canopy-top for chimneys consisting of a collapsible frame comprising a plurality of wire legs having eyes at their upper ends and having sheet-metalchimney-engaging clips at their lower ends formed with struck-up oblong portions having holes at each end which receive the lower ends of the Wire legs, a een- In testimony WhereofIhave signed my name trally-disposed gromet upon which the eyes to this specification 1n the presence of two subof the several legs are superimposed, a top scr1b1ngw1tnesses.
plate having a central groinet, and a detach- GEO. H. HUSE. able fastening passing through the groniet of Witnesses: 1 the top plate and through the groniet of the L. H. HARRIMAN,
frame, substantially as described. H. B. DAVIS.
