CUSHION-HEEL FOR BOOTSgAND- SHOES.
nmseasev.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24, 1907.
Application filed April 27, 1906. "Serial No. 313,974.
To all whom it may concern: g I
Be. it known that 1, Manama J. Knimnnmresiding at .Brockton, in the county ,ofgPlymouth'and .State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements Cushion-Heels \for Boots and Shoes, of which of which maybe readily attached or detached thereto," the said sect-ionsbeing provided with means whereby the attachment and detachment may be accomplished with facility and without particular skill, and the attachment a secure one without detracting appreciably from the cushion function of the'heel. 7
With these objects in view the invention consists in a cushion heel for boots and shoes constructed'as hereinafter described and claime d, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the base section of the heel; Fig. 2 similar view (5f the top or cushion section; Fig. 3 sectional view of the section shown in Fig. 1;.Fig. fl: sectional view of the section shown in Fig. 2 Figs-detail of two parts of the heel assembled; Fig. 6 a perspective view 'of one form of theanchor of the base section; Fig. 7 a perspective of the anchor strip of the top section; 8a detail'oi the anchorof'the top section. In the said drawing the reference numeral 1 designates the base or permanent section of the heeli This section is a molded one of any suitable composition such as hard rubber and may bemanufactured in various standard sizes and shapes, and, therefore, very econoinical, as compared with structures made up of leather layers. Incorporated into this. base section of the heel in the process of molding the same is an anchor which consists of a single plate 2 conforming in outline to that of the heel section. The anchor-is ofmetal or the equivalent,- preferably steel, and is provided with screw-threaded holes 3 marginally disposed with respect to thesection 1, which serve for attaching and detaching the cushion heel section as will be described. The
body of the section l is provided with a series of screwleading holes 4, registering with the holes 3 in the anchor. The said anchor, and also the body of the -heelbase section, is provided with a series of openings 5, 6, for the passage of nails by which thesection is permanently secured to the boot or shoe.
For the purpose of providing an air cushion in' the base-section of the heel, the latter is hollowed out at its middle as shown at 7, and centrally of this hollowed out cavity is an opening 8 extending entirely through said section. The anchor-plate is provided with-a similar central opening 9 defined by a flange 10, which fits into and bears against and supports the walls of the cavity 7. l p
The attachable and detachable topor cushion section 11 of theheel consists of molded soft rubber, and
incorporated therewith in the process of molding at the forward end thereof is 'an anchor strip 12 extending from side to side acrossthe front edge of the heel section, and conforming to the shape thereof,'and pro vided'with rearwardly extending members 12, 12.
.Said anchor strip forms an extended means of attachment about the fore part of the cushion section 11 of the heel, whereby the latter maybe firmly connected to the base section. The said anchor strip is provided with a number of openings 13, registering with similar openings 14 inthe cushion section 11 for the passage of screw-shanks. Screws 15 are passed through the openingsltand 13 into the screw-leading openings 4; in the base section 1, and into'threaded engagement with the screw threaded-openings 3 in the anchor of said basesection, whereby the cushion section of the heel is firmly connected to the base section. The incorporation in the cushion-section 11' of the heel of a metallicor-like anchor is essential to its firm connection with-the base section, avoiding liability of the screwshan-ks either enlarging the bore of the holes in the cushion section of the heel or causing a tearing of said section, in either of which possible events, the
cushion section would become loose and wabbly and soon become detachedirointhe base section. At the same time the incorporation of such metallic anchor into the cushion section tends to detract from the cushion function thereof. minimum, the anchor 12 of my invention' may be of strip form, conforming to the marginal shape'and dimensions of the fore part of said section, leaving the central portion 16 and substantially the rear portion 17 thereof, where the cushion action is most desired, free of restraint to perform its iunction.
At the rear I provide a small anchor 18 which "is molded into the cushion section 11 and provided with a screw opening 19 through which ascrew 20 may he passed into engagement with a corresponding thread ed opening 3 in the anchor of the base section. Preferably and for .the purpose of providing an antislipping plug to increase the frictional hold of the cushion-heel upon the ground, the anchor 18 is provided with a plug opening 21 into which may be driven a wooden or other suitable plug 22. This plug being exposed on the wearing surface of the cushion heel serves efliciently to guard against slipping'on frosty or icy streets.
The screw passages or openings 14 in the cushion section of the heel, above the anchor strip therein.
To reduce this detraction to a may be l'rusto-conicnl, decreasing in area toward the wear surface, anti be filled with rubber plugs 23 to prevent the entrance of dirt or foreign matter.
By my invcntion I provide a cushion heel for'hoots 1 and shoes of novel and economical manufacture, the
cushion suction of which may be i'o tlily and securely attached to tlie lmsc section. Tho cushion section.
incorpurntcd tliorcin wind providcti with sci-ow thrcztdcd I openings and further provided with u flungc cxtcnding in said cavity; :l'ntl. u cushion scction providcd with an anchor having openings cor-rcsponding to tho sci-cw openings in thefhase section and screws extending through the strip and plate for connecting the sections together.
:2. A cushion heel for j.boots and shoes consisting of a plastic base section provided with 2i central-savity-an an- -chor plate cmbedded'i'n said section and conforming incontour to the contour of the-section, said plots having a central opening and u flangending in said cavity and furthcr provided with screw openings and acushion sec -tion provided with an anchor strip arranged in close proximity to the forward cdg of said cushion section and having rcaru'urdly extending a'rins, said strip havingopt-niugs corresponding to the openings in said plate, and Int-nus cxtending through the strip and plate for connectingthe scctions togthcr. in testimony whereof- I luive hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing x'yitncss I Mun c J.
