Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented-sept. io, 1907.
l Application filed September 25,1906. Serial No. 386,185.
vinvented certain new and usefulV Improvements in= Swings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improve-ments in swings, and the invention has for its primary object to provide a swing for infants that caribe used in a house as a cradle.
Another object of this invention is to provide a swing which can be collapsed to form a comparatively small bundle, that can be readily stored away.
A lfurther object' of this invention is the provision of novel means in connection with a swing for oscillating the same. v
A still further object of this invention is to provide a combination swing and cradle which will be simple in construction, strong and durable and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture;
With these and other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction. combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and then speciically pointed out in the claims. Y
Referring to the drawing forming part of this application, like numerals oi reference designate correspond' ing parts throughout the several views, in which1- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved swing,
Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a plan. v
. To put my invention into practice, '1 construct my improved swing of two standards 1, supported by eet 2 having casters 3 oi a conventional form. The feet 2 are detachably connected to the standards by pins 4, said pins being connected by chains or cords to the pins 10 hereafter described, carried ,by the standards 1.
y The standards l at their upper ends arc connwted by an ornamental cross frame (i having depending s idehooks 7. Thil frame (i is also detachably connected to the standards by pins` S. which are connected by chains or cords 5 to the frame U. l cross bar l) is dolaihably connected to the standards l by pins l() carried by said:
lines in said view, byy fastening members carried by the head piece Iand the sides oi the cradle body. The
head piece is normally maintained in a closed position by a hook 15 carried by the side wall 16 of the cradle body. An improved astening member the present instance is shown in the foi-moi a rod pivoted at'its outer end to the edge of the head'piece at a point slightly below the upper edge ofthe side wall 20 of the cradle body. The inner end of'said rod'is bent angularly se that it overlies the said upper edge of the side walls 20, and is provided with a loop the eye 18 to engage with pins 19 carried in said upper edge of the said side wall. By providing a plurality of loops or eyes 18, the head piece 14 may be placedand retained in prac,- tically any desired inclination. i
The feet 2 of the swing are provided with bearings 2l in which is journaled a rock shaft 22 having foot treads 23 and a crank arm 24. The crank arm 24 is connected by a link 2.5 to the rear or'foot'end of the cradle body as at 26.
The cradle body may be oscillated by hand, or the loot treads 23 may be used to'oscillate the swing, while the casters o'f the swing permit of it being moved from one compartment to another, without disturbing an infant lying in the same.
The adjustable head piece ofthe cradle body permits of an iufants head being raised or lowered at any desired inclination, and in this connection, I desire it to be understood that the head of the cradle body, as well as the side walls thereof and foot, may be made of slats or rails in lieu of the-solid boards fas shown.
By withdrawing thefvarious pins of the swing, 'the standards, legs and their appartenant parts can be placed in the cradle body, and as a whole stored away.
Such changesin the size, and minor details of construction Aenteringr into the swing may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
.What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In n swinging cradle, 'a support, n cradle body swinginglysuspended from'said support and having a hinged he: piece, and fastening members for said'head piece coulprising ro lspivoted to lhe'li'ead piece and having angular inner ends overlying lhi s idc walls' of the cradle body and provided with loops, and pins carried by the side walls of said cradle body to engage said loops.
ln testimony whereof I ailix my signature in the presence o1' two wilucsscs.
