Description

Children's furniture with variable functions including suspended cot
The subject of the invention is a children's furniture with variable functions including suspended cot. With changing the elements of the furniture it is possible to create a furniture system that can be used for children from birth to teenager years.
It is necessary to provide an appropriate environment for the children coping with the requirements of their actual age while they are growing up. The environment should always match the children's age and rate of development. To meet this demand it is necessary to create a new environment in every three-four years from toddler age to adolescent time. Nowadays in modern flats it is not easy to create a suitable environment which is harmonious and at the same time proper both regarding size as well as function, as the conditions of accomodation -either in a block of flats or in a detached house are limited.
In case of young children, especially in case of babies providing a proper place for them is a great problem. The conventional solution is the use of a cot, which can not be easily placed in modern flats, however its use is especially advantageous for the baby as it ensures a quiet surrounding where resting is guaranted. Though with the baby's growing up the cot becomes unnecessary and its storing might mean additional problems.
Hungarian utility model HU U 85 describes children's furniture with multiple functions in the state of the art. This piece of furniture can be changed into a bunk bed with bedding holder, into stall bars sports equipment including stall bars, into a dartsboard, into a slider, into a ping-pong table, into a puppet show theatre with the help of wooden ribs, as well as short metal tubes fitted on the wooden ribs and a ladder frame positioned on the floor level, fixed by an upper stiffener with a long metal tube with threaded axel end. A chain is fixed to the ladder frame with a flat- iron, and the upper bed leg is parallel with the ladder frame. The long sides of the upper bed which are connected with wooden ribs are joined the ladder frame and can be turned along the rotation point.
HU 218 251 Hungarian patent describes furniture especially children's furniture made of elements that can be joined each other. This furniture of elements can be characterized by that, the furniture consists of elements of cube shape which are of fixed edge length, self-sustaining, self-supporting and can be extended in any direction of the spatial axes and can be loaded as well. It is based on prism formed from cube respectively elements of rectangular shape and elements of various different shapes.
Hungarian Patent No. P 91 02136 published under No. 61 658 on 1 March 1993 describes a swinging children's cot standing on smooth supports with double suspension. In the solution described here the cot swings with the help of a suspending element moving around axles built between the upcoming part of the base structure and the downgoing part of the body of the bed. The axes are provided with bushings or with ball-bearings. The cot can be converted into a seat by unscrewing and removing one of the protecting bars of the body of the bed.
French Patent No. FR 2 847 444 describes a bed-system for children that can be changed several ways. It has parts that can be pulled out of a frame-system, which can be used as a desk, a store etc. The bed surface serving as a resting place is formed on the upper part of the frame-system. Patent No. GB 969 617 describes a multifunction furniture-system for children that can be converted as requested. Here the system is provided with frames supported by legs, which are used depending on the function required. The system can be converted into a changing table or children's bed.
The drawbacks of the solutions in the state of the art:
The separate, suspended cot, which is not built into a system has no changing table with a cupboard suitable for storing children's accessories. So it is necessary for the parents to buy additional stuff necessary for the nursing of the baby by all means. It means an additional task for the parents, not to mention the fact, that the subsequently purchased goods might not match with the rest of the furniture.
After the baby has grown out of the cot it is necessary to buy again a new piece of furniture (a children's bed) to provide a place for them whereas the cot has to be stored somewhere as well. If the child has grown out of his children's bed as well then both pieces of furniture become useless, they have to be disposed or donated, because no changing table is needed any more. It is necessary to buy again a bed, and a small table. All in all it is clear that the solutions in the state of the art are inadequate to provide an unanimous answer to the children's furniture requirements in accordance with their body development within a single system making structural changes only. The earlier solutions were consequently not suitable to satisfy the demands of different ages with the proper combination of the elements of a single furniture system.
When working out the solution according to the invention we aimed to make a piece of children's furniture consisting of various elements which can be varied in their function, can be connected in different ways to be assembled as a piece of furniture with new function in a way, that each element gets a role in the system. We also aimed to create a therapeutic and developing device - elaborated on basis of observations and experiments - for young children, primarily for babies, which is suitable for developing children, in given case to correct disabilities or damages acquired during birth or during growing up.
When working out the solution according to the invention we realized, that in case we make a piece of children's furniture including several basic elements, among which there are basic elements and supplementary ones which can be connected in various ways in accordance with various targets, then the set aim can be achieved. We furthermore also realized, that in case we create such a therapeutic and developing device for young children, primarily for babies, which includes a bed or cot for the young child or baby, which is suspended and able to swing freely in a suitable way, then the set aim can be achieved. This device can be advantageously realized by the version shown in Figure 1 of the children's furniture, in which case the bed is a cot which is suspended on a roof element located on a frame.

The back and front lower connecting timbers 7, 8 between the frames 1 form the frame of the normal children's bed 22. The board elements with grid 12 and the big lower board element with grid 14 forming earlier the elements of the fixed children's bed 19 and cot 9 are put between these back and front lower connecting timbers 7, 8. Furthermore two more height adjusting and tail-piece elements 16 come here as supplements and so the full length of the normal children's bed 22 is reached. The board elements with grid 12 are placed crosswise to the board element with grid 14 in the bottom of the normal children's bed 22.
One end of the solid board element 4 used as a table top rests on the back connecting plank 6 between the frames 1, as well as on one of the cross-holders of the frame 1. The other end of the solid board element 4 rests on the cabinet 15 and it is fixed there preferably by screwing. So between the frame 1 and the cabinet 15 a surface suitable for a desk is formed. On the top, at the front of the frame structure 23 is the facade decoration plank 17 placed in given case.
Fig 4 shows a storing structure or seat formed from the two remaining end-closing boards 10 as well as the lower board element with grid 13 of the cot 9, furthermore from other auxiliary elements, that is from the short lateral support elements 21. This way from the remaining pieces of the furniture system another piece of furniture can be formed that can be well used in the children's room.
Fig 5 shows a possible further preferable embodiment of the solution according to the invention - as a desk-shelf assembly with a cabinet 15 to be used from ten till the age of 16. Fig 6 shows a separate complete bed for teenagers formed from the remaining elements.
In a given application the furniture system according to the invention can be converted into a separate complete bed-desk complex as well. This case as it can be seen in Fig 5 the two standing frames 1 create a writing top together with the solid board element 4 supported in the middle from the bottom by the cabinet 15. The two ends of the solid board element 4 rest on the short height adjusting and tail-piece elements 16 fixed from inside.
Fig 6 shows a separate complete bed for teenagers formed from the remaining elements. As it can be seen in the figure the ends of the teenager bed formed this way are 180 degree reverse on the end-closing boards 10 used earlier as ends for the cot 9. When forming the teenager bed the end-closing boards 10 are connected with the back lower connecting timbers 7, 8 as lengthwise stiffeners and similarly to the solution to be seen in Fig 3 the lateral board element with grid 12 and big lower board element with grid 14 are put among them. Between the back and front lower connecting timbers 7, 8 short height adjusting and tail-piece elements 16 are built in preferably at 1/3 of the length respectively at 2/3 across to stiffen them.
Fig 7 shows the end closing board 10 with the bores 18 formed on it to be used for assembling the cot respectively different beds. The system includes two pieces of these. The bores 18 serve placing cot suspending rope 11 to form the cot 9, and at other applications they serve to fix other connecting elements.
Fig 8 shows the sides of the cot 9 respectively the lower board element with grid 12 forming a part of the bottom of the fixed children's bed 19. The furniture system according to the invention includes two pieces of these.
Fig 9 shows the short lateral support element 21 of the short board element with grid 12 respectively 13. The short lateral support element 21 is provided with bores 18 making possible the joining respectively the connection. The furniture system according to the invention includes six pieces of these. Fig 10 shows forming of the bottom of the cot 9 respectively the lower board element with grid 13 forming a part of the bottom of the normal children's bed 22. The system includes one piece of it.
Fig 11 shows forming of the sides of the fixed children's bed 19 as well as that of the big lower board element with grid 14 forming the protective surface below the cot 9. The system includes two pieces of these. They are used together when making the fixed children's bed 19.
Fig 12 shows the two lower connecting timbers 7, 8 of profile form of the frame system. The system includes two pieces of these.
Fig 13 shows the height adjusting and tail-piece element 16 which was shown in another assembly adjusting the height of the edge of the changing table 20, respectively in given case providing the back tail-piece for the changing table 20. The system includes four pieces of these. They are used furthermore during forming the beds to be seen in Fig 4 and Fig 6.
Fig 14 shows the principle of the suspension of the cot from the top. As it can be seen in the figure, the cot 9 suspended at the two ends by the cot suspending rope 11 to the roof element 2 connecting the frames 1 on the top, in given case with the help of the suspension elements 3. To ensure the stability of the frame structure 23 the frames 1 are connected with the back and front lower connecting timbers 7, 8. Resulting from the baby's movements the cot 9 moves to the side as main direction due to the double suspension. The sway obviously has lengthwise components as well. The inertia of the cot 9 is bigger this way. The movement of the cot 9 into torsion, respectively rotation direction is very slight. So the suspension according to the invention allows one sideway main movement, and an auxiliary orientating movement along the axes, which is perpendicular to the sideway movement.
Preferable possible assemblies of the children's furniture according to the invention:
1. As baby's furniture: Changing table with suspended cot (Fig 1)
2. Toddler's furniture: Changing table with fixed children's bed up to the age of three (Fig 2)
3. Children's table-bed assembly: from the age of three up to 12 (Fig 3, 4)
4. Separate complete bed - desk assembly: from the age of 10 up to 16 (Fig 5, 6) hi a concrete preferable embodiment of the solution according to the invention additional supplementary elements are used such as: - changing table mat cot mat insert
The material of certain part elements in case of a preferable application: natural wood, pine or hard woods, for example beech. Surface treatment: water base lacquer, or untreated.
Joining or fixing of part elements:
Elements of frame: joining with pegs, with adhesives, in a fixed way,
The elements of the furniture system according to the invention the frame, the roof element, the back connecting elements, the solid board element, the facade decoration plank, the upper, respectively back connecting timber and the suspension element are fixed with screwing, with special screw, with cross-bore screw.
The cabinet is finished as a single unit, with three drawers, which is marketed in a single unit form.
The board elements with grid are assembled from wooden planks by using pegs and with adhesives. The end-closing boards are from pine cut, developed and glued from one piece.
The suspension rope used for the cot: non-porous material of suitable load-bearing e.g. plastic or preferably hemp rope which is in given case guided into a flexible protective tube.
The board elements with grid are connected with the certain other units by cross-wise bore screw connection. All the connections that are reversible and can be assembled newly are made this way as well. For example the parts of the cot, making of the changing table, the connection of the bed, respectively the desk top.
To prevent an accidental strong swing, or bumping into the back board a cot-brake is applied at the suspension of the cot, which is a rope fixed behind the swaying cot between the frame and the changing table. The cot-brake is furthermore preferably a rubbered rope.
The advantages of the children's furniture according to the invention: A further advantage of the children's furniture according to the invention is, that it needs not much space. The main part of the frame structure, the two standing frames can be preserved all the time, the different part elements are put between these according to the certain new forms. Every single part unit is used again and again with different functions, so not a single element need storing even for a temporary period in lack of application.
Further advantages: It is a very advantageous thing in itself to put the baby into a suspended cot. According to experiences it results in an early development of the movement skills, coordinating abilities of children. Furthermore the sway-cot serves children's healthy development.
The sway-cot offers possibilities of further corrections:
The frequency and amplitude of the swing is apt to correct the possible damages of the vestibular system at birth in arrears.
The amplitude of the swing is such, as the child's movement passes to the cot, from a few centimeters up to 10-20 cm. The structure itself allows a swing of +/- 20 cm for the child's safety. The frequency of the swing is the length of the suspension of the cot, as well as the frequency of the physical pendulum determined by the mass of the cot and that of the child, characteristically 0.2 - 2-5 Hz. The swing itself can not be characterized by a single frequency, but a spectrum of frequencies, as the child's kicking or movements trigger a swing of multiple directions in the suspended system. These subtle movements have effect on the vestibular system inducing the baby to compensate the swing. Anyway the cot swing simulates the conditions in the mother's womb.
The length of the suspension of the cot: the bottom of the cot is from 120-150 cm, preferably from 140 cm from the point of suspension. To achieve the optimum swaying parameters the baby's weight, the mass of the cot should be taken into consideration.
The point is, that the cot leaves the state of rest resulting from movements of any direction of the baby, encouraging the baby to restore the balance state. The suspended cot is suitable to develop the reflexes of a newborn baby, that can be woken by the age of three months.
The way of suspension of the cot according to the solution of the invention contributes to the advantageous effects of development. It is especially advantageous, that the cot is suspended at both ends, because this way the cot reacts as a double suspended mechanical swing system to the movements of the baby in the cot, so it does not rotate, does not turn, but has an orientated movement arranged to a main direction. This movement orientated to the main direction is an answer to the mechanical shifting effect resulting from the baby's movements, kickings, which is especially suitable to develop, respectively to correct the balance, respectively vestibular system of the baby. The movement of the fluid in the vestibular system chanels will follow the orientating movement of the baby, by this arranging the stimuli of the vestibular system to the privileged direction. It greatly helps eliminate disabilities acquired during birth or possibly during fetal state.
The free swinging in the suspended cot can develop the baby's sense of balance. According to experience the baby staying in a suspended cot is able to learn to catch and move objects as it likes earlier and safer. They stand up earlier and their walk is significantly safer than those babies' who stayed in a children's bed following their birth. They can also start speaking earlier. Regarding the quality of their sleep, there is a considerable difference between babies staying in cots and those in beds. The former babies sleep much deeper and they wake up in a more pleasant way, they wake up crying very rarely. During waking up stage they are entertained by the soft sway of the cot. They fall asleep quicker and without less problems than babies in beds. A 20 month-old baby in cot could climb into an adult's rocking chair, which was not fixed, with amazing skill without any help. The baby could balance the swaying of the rocking chair while climbing into it.
One of the babies whose development was followed, it was a girl, who was born healthy during a delivery with no problems. The other baby was born in an artificial way with birth traumas, with lack of oxygen. In the first days the baby was in life- danger. It was put into a suspended cot at the age of five days, and its development was simply amazing. In three months time it could catch up with the babies born healthy and normally. According to my experience the 10 cm movement of the cot compared to rest state has a calming effect on the babies. Bigger sway than that scared them and triggered unpleasant feelings.
