SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 726,028, dated April 21, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILANDER F. CHASE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Berwyn, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,haveinvented a new and usefulImprovement in Childrens Exercisingand- Amusement Apparatus, of which "the following is a specification.
In the Letters Patent'No. 652,472, granted to moon June 10, 1900, Ishowa construction of high chair for childrens use having a ladder formed between its hind legs and a large opening in the back through which the child may get onto and 0d the seat without assistance from parents or nurses. Theinvention has-proved very beneficial, as the children are better pleased ordinarily to help themselves in this manner than they wouldbe to be lifted to and from the chairs.
My present invention is an attachment to a high chair and is well adapted to be used with the chair of my said patent, and I prefer to so use it. It is intended to serve as an exercising or amusement device for children, in the use of which they will find both healthful exercise and amusement.
The invention can be used either indoors or outdoors by child ren from two to ten years of age,-and it embodies a childs dining chair or stool open at the back, so the child can gain access to the seat from that side, and an inclined board attached at one end to the front of the chair or stool and resting at the other end on the floor.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective of myinvention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a modified construction. Fig. 3 is a partial horizontal section. Fig. 4 is a partial vertical section of the construction shown at Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective of the pillow used to protect the clothing. Fig. 6 isa perspective of another modified construction. Fig. 7 is a detail of the removable back of Fig. 6; and Fig.8 is a view similar to the other main figures, showing the invention applied to a stool.
Referring to the drawings, 10 represents a childs dining-chair, such as is shown in my saidpatent, with rungs or spindles 11 between the hind legs adapted to serve as a ladder, and the back of the chair having a large opening 12 above the seat, whereby the child ascending by the rungs 11 is enabled to get onto the seat of the chair.
Attached to the front of the chair-seat is the slide-board 13, the attachment being preferably by means of a separable hinge. I prefer to use common door-hinges 14 for this purpose the parts of which are readily separated by taking out the pintles 15 and leave no obj eclionable projections when separated. Other forms of hinges may, however, be used. The board inclines downward from the hinged end nearly to the floor, its lower end being preferably provided with short standards or feet 16, tipped with rubber, so they will not injure a carpet or polished floor. These feet should be high enough to enable the children to alight on their feet after sliding down,
which they could not do if the board extended clear to the floor. Small metal chips 17 are preferably attached to the front side of the front legs, where they may bear upon the floor. They are'intended to prevent the chair from tipping forward when the board is overloaded, as when two or more children are on it at the same time. The board increases the ability of the chair to resist any backward overturning when the child is climbing into it from the rear.
In Fig. 6 the construction of the chair is modified in that the back is removable, being formed ofa cross-bar 18, with its ends grooved or slotted to enable it to fit the top rail 19 of the raised sides of the chair. Y
The form shown at Fig. 2 is intended for quiteyoungchildren,theboardbeingprovided .with wings or guards 20, and it may be attached to the chair by means of hooks 21, engaging the top rung 22 in the front of the chair. The Wings safeguard the child from falling sidewise from the board at the beginning of the sliding movement, and they consist, preferably, of a standard and top rail, as shown.
The device shown at Fig. 8 consists of an ordinary high stool with branching legs and toe-clips 17 and with the slide-board'suitably hinged to it. I prefer, however, to use the chair with raised sides, as illustrated in the other figures, because the child is less likely to fall with them than with the stool, the side arms forming convenient handles to hold onto while passing over the seat and while getting onto the board.
In order to save the clothing from wear, the children may use pillows 25, the covering of which is adapted to slip easily and with little friction on the polished or smooth sliding-board.
The pleasure attending the sliding will induce the child to climb up many times, and thereby it gets very healthful bodily exercise, tending to good physical development. The slide-board should be smooth and free from splinters.
I claim 1. The exercise apparatus for children, consisting of a childs dining chair or stool, the back whereof above the seat is open so as to give access to the seat from that side, and an inclined slide-board secured at one end in front of the seat, and with its other end supported at the floor, substantially as specified.

6. The exercise apparatus for children, consisting of a childs dining chair or stool, the back whereof above the seat is open so as to give access to the seat from that side, and an inclined slide-board provided with side guards and secured at its upper end in front of the seat, and with its other end supported at the floor, substantially as specified.
7. The exercise apparatus for children consisting of a childs dining chair or stool, the back whereof above the seat is open so as to give access to the seat from that side, and an inclined slide-board secured at one end in front of the seat, and with its other end provided with standards of suificient height to enable the child to alight on its feet, substantially as specified.
8. The exercise apparatus for children, consisting of a childs dining chair or stool, the back whereof above the seat is open so as to give access to the seat from that side, and an inclined slide-board secured at one end in front of the seat, and with its other end provided with rubber tipped standards, substantially as specified.
9. The high chair provided with toe-clips 17 on its front legs, in combination with a slide-board attached to the chair in front of the seat, substantially as specified.
