and useful Improvements in Mattresses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
1 0 This invention relates to improvements in mattresses.
The object of the invention is to provide a mattress having arranged therein a series of ventilating ducts and means whereby the walls of said ducts are sustained and supported when the mattress is in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the mattress constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken through one of the ventilating ducts of the mattress and showing the supporting tube for said duct arranged in position therein, Fig. 3 is a similar view with the supporting tube removed; and Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-sectional view of the mattress.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the mattress which consists of an outer covering or tick formed of any suitable material in which is arranged a filling of cotton, hair, or any other material of which mattresses are usually made.
Arranged through the mattress are a series of longitudinally disposed flexible duets which are preferably formed of tubes or sleeves of leather suitably secured to the side coverings of the mattress and extending from one end to the other and opening through the end walls of the mattress.
The walls of the tubular ducts 2 are provided along their length with a series of alined or oppositely disposed ventilating holes 3 by means of which air entering the opposite ends of the ducts will pass through said apertures or holes 3 into the material forming the filling of the mattress thereby thoroughly ventilating and airing the same.
l l 1 i i 1 I In order to prevent the walls of the ducts from collapsing and to hold the mattress in shape when in use I provide a series of elastic expander members or tubes lwhich are adapted to be inserted into and through the passages 2 in the mattress. of any suitable material, but are preferably formed of rubber so that the elasticity of the mattress will be maintained and increased and the latter prevented from becoming flat or collapsed when in use by reason of the passages 2 formed therethrough. When the mattress is taken out for airing or ventilation, the supporting tubes 4 are removed from the ducts 2 so as to permit the free access of air through said ducts and into the ventilating holes 3 formed therein to thoroughly air and ventilate the inside of the mattress. It is to be particularly noted that owing to the'ducts being flexible and the expander tubes composed oi elastic material, the application of these parts to the mattress will in no wise affect the pliability thereof and consequently will not detract irom the properties of the mattress when in use.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention Will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is,
A mattress having arranged therein a series of flexible tubular ventilating ducts extended wholly and longitudinally therethrough and opening at their ends through the ends of the mattress cover forming air passages, said ducts being; secured to one of the side covers of the mattress and having their walls perforated at intervals throughout their length to form passages opening into the filling of the mattress, and elastic expander tubes removably inserted into said ducts for preventing collapsing thereof when the mattress is in use.
